Low backache -especially in the morning

Help. I've had ongoing back ache for probbly 6 months. In the mornings it is awful and if I stand still for too long - eg. watching school Easter service last week. It feels like it's locked and I have to bend and stretch my back.

I've seen back wraps in Boots and wondered if that would help. One is just a support wrap and another has magnetic thing in which I'm very sceptical about. Does anyone kow if these do any good?

I'm thinking it's been caused by my wellies over the winter. I wear them to walk the dog twice a day and although they are fairly comfortable I can feel my feet slipping around a bit - I need good support for my feet as had problems with them when I was little.

Any help gratefully received.

GETTING OLD

McDreamy · 07/04/2010 09:10

Are you drinking enough fluids?

chopstheduck · 07/04/2010 09:12

have you put on weight?

I had a lot of backache like that when I put on weight and blamed the mattress. But it stopped completely when I lsot 2 stone.

Elibean · 07/04/2010 09:17

Definitely be careful of footwear, if you hvae flat feet (fallen arches) you will get lower back/hip ache easily.

Getting older doesn't help either

slug · 07/04/2010 10:29

Are you sleeping on your stomach? If your mattress is getting a bit soft or if you already have a pulled muscle/pain in your back, sleeping on your stomach can exaggerate the curve and leave you with early morning back pain. If you routinely sleep on your stomach, try putting a pillow under your belly to straighten out your back.

Thanks for replies - I do have flat feet. I suppose I'm getting older although I don't think of myself as getting older as I've a couple of years before 40!

Mattress is firm. I tend to sleep on my side.I think I drink enough fluids and I haven't put on any weight - I'm a good weight for my height.

Must be my feet. I think I'll have to ditch my lovely wellies for a time and get some walking type shoes.

Belgianbun - are osteopaths nice? My dh goes to a chiropractor and his bone crunching stories terrify me.

Pilates is likely to help, sounds like sacro iliac pain to me.

Also if you mattress is firm try a memory foam topper on top of it

Buzzybb · 11/05/2010 22:54

I feel your pain although mine locks and i fall down vvv. I used physio and acupuncture to help, an orthopaedic mattress and a good pillow help as the others have said.
Re foot wear unfortunately it may require some shopping shoes that support your feet [not wellies] good arch support and I find I cannot wear completely flat shoes, it needs a little heel.
Pilates and yoga is good [but I find it boring] or water exercise is good.
Dissolve-able disprin is also good to take away pain.
Have you been to GP? It might be good to go now and get x ray/ bone density scan [I had them done at 24 and every 2 yrs since ] still I never refuse

PS meant to say I used to have to fall out of bed to the floor, get to my knees and then get up and forget walking down the stairs for a few minutes. Did you sleep with a pillow while pregnant for support I find when very bad that helps. also stretch before you get up and if possible do it slowly stretching all the time
