Don't suppose anyone has any knowledge/experience of mitral valve prolapse?

I know this is a long shot, to cut a very long story short, there's a genetic condition that I need investigating for but associated to can be mitral valve prolapse, my symptoms:
Sharp chest pain that lasts a second or two, always in the same place inside my chest, about half way down on the right, happens at any time (resting and exercise)
Lethargy
blue/purple lips and fingernails
Sometimes short of breath (feels like I can't breathe in properly aswell)
very Pale most of the time
Strange heart beat on and off for the last few years, misses a beat then doubles up.

I have been to the GP a few times and mentioned the chest pain, he listens and says it works normally, I've been having these symptoms since I was a child. I did some research and it ways it isn't audible and shows up on an echo. I am just wondering about treatment.

Thankyou

Really feel for you...

The symptoms you describe sound either like quite severe MVP (which should be audible to a GP through a stethescope) or something else. It sounds as you say as though you do need an echo and/or cardiology referral, especially with genetics in there.

Good luck!

Hello BelleDCFB, have you actually had an echo or a 24 hour heart monitor or even an ECG? If not, I am suprised that your GP isn't referring you for some standard tests or to a cardiologist. Your symptoms sound quite debilitating.

I have an elongated mitral valve leaflet which is indicative of early mitral valve prolapse (this was diagnosed with an echo) but I am not receiving any treatment other than repeat echo cardiograms every two years and I don't have any of the symptoms you list other than an intermittent strange heartbeat.

Are you by any chance also hypermobile? Is the genetic condition that you are referring to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome? I think that MVP is sometimes common with the vascular strain of EDS, but it's very rare. Anyway that's a complete longshot and I'm sure that MVP is associated with a number of different medical conditions and conversely your symptoms may be unrelated to a mitral valve problem. However, with the longterm symptoms you have recounted I would certainly return to your GP for further advice and investigation.

I hope you feel better soon.

It's a daft question but would your GP have made the connection between the genetic condition and your concerns about Mitral prolapse? IME something like Marfan's, for example is not very widely known about, so unless you are under specialist care it's easy for things like an ECHO to exclude any cardiac involvement can be forgotten about.

Thankyou for answering

Gp's a bit naff to be honest. I also have MS (there's a thread or two about my GP and how helpful he was on here somewhere, I do get really tired but I have always had times of being knackered for no reason since I was a child), I gave up mentioning the really sharp chest pain, he did listen a few times and said it was OK. I had to have an ECG a couple of years ago after having a rection to some antibiotics, she said it looked a bit odd but it was OK.
I am hypermobile, it was ds's physio that has me thinking though, he's also hypermobile but his is worse then mine. I mentioned to her that he complains of pain and she asked me if he had any circulatory problems so I googled. It sounds like we both have EDS, I think it's on my mothers side, her sister died a few years ago from a heart related disease, my cousins have funny shaped noses that look like there's a cartilage problem, my nephew is also showing signs of hypermobility, my mum has arthritis/cardiac/respiratory problems aswell.
There is one GP that's helpful in the practice but he's hard to get an appointment with.

Make an appointment to see the good GP, explain about your concerns re EDS and ask him if he would do auscultation and ECG to put your mind at ease. In MVP it's common to hear what is called a midsystolic click (this happens as the left ventricle contracts and empties of blood, the prolapsing leaflet of the mitral valve "falls into" (can't think of a better way to describe it!)the left ventricle. This causes the supporting chords to tense up, producing the click sound.) It's also common in chronic MV disease to be in AF which would be picked up on ECG.
Hope this is of some use, any other questions I'll try my best to answer them!
