Should I go to A&E?

I've been having horrendous stomach problems.

I went to the GP Monday who was great, I've been refered for a sigmoidoscopy (camera up the bum) and had bloods done.

But since Monday its gotten so worse,

its now cramps most of the day, mild period type ones.

But I keep getting bad pains after I eat.

I stupidly had a curry a few days ago and was very ill the next morning.

But yesterday I stuck to non spicy foods (mash, veg , sausage, i also had a bowl of cereal and an easter egg)

and all nigth i was on the loo, vomitting, laying on the landing in agony, I was so close to calling my mum and asking her to take me to A&E.

If it happens agin should I go?

I can't do this everyday,

its like labour

Could be Gallstones, I would go to A&E to be checked out especially if you are in that much pain. You could be waiting ages for a sigmoidoscopy.

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 13:06

Thats what I was thinking, I don't want to be carrying on like this for 6 weeks when I get to see someone.

I think gallstone pain is higher up?

They think I have IBS or crohn.

DH says to go the drop in or walk in centre.

He also says if you have had d & s for more than 24 hours you need to head to A&E. He suffered from ulcerative colitis for 20 odd years - he has been there and done this and works very closely with the IA - he speaks to patients/sufferers.

Please take his advice.

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 13:18

d & s?

I will see if the walk in is open today, if not ill go tomorrow.
thanks x

diarohea and sickness.

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 13:22

ah right sorry, yes. I've had it on and off for a week really.

The walk in centre should be open - if you are not sure where it is DH said to look on the NHS website, put your postcode in and it will tell you where your nearest one is.

I can so sympathise with how you are feeling (even though I have never had anything like this) because I know how DH felt.

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 13:38

Is there any point in going there though? What can the walkin centre do. Won't they just tell me to go to A&E?

Go to A&E. You could have diverticulitis - another lovely option. My mum had this, didn't go anywhere until it got unbearable by which time the diverticulum had perforated and she ended up having a colostomy (thank God she didn't die of septicaemia, the docs said she was one day away from getting it)

Don't mess around, just go to A&E. Just in case.

FabIsGettingThere · 05/04/2010 13:41

Just go to A&E. They will soon send you away if it wasn't necessary. I hope you feel better soon.

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 13:47

They wont admit me tho will they? i dont want to have to stay overnight

OP posts:
FabIsGettingThere · 05/04/2010 13:51

If you don't go the chances are you will remain in pain. If you do go you have the chance of getting treatment. Just go.

thumbchick · 05/04/2010 13:51

lovey, if you're really ill they probably will have to - as I said, with my Mum, if they hadn't admitted her and operated the next day she would have died.
That's a lot longer away from home than an overnight stay.

Phone NHS direct if you really don't want to go to A&E but I would just go.

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 13:58

ok i really hate hospitals, i had homebirths so i didn't have to stay overnight

FabIsGettingThere · 05/04/2010 14:01

You hate being ill and in pain more though?

thumbchick · 05/04/2010 14:03

God I know the feeling but you really need to find out what's going on - if it's nothing that serious, they will send you home again. Even if you have diverticulitis or whatever, so long as there is no perforation then they will probably just give you antibiotics and send you home again.

They aren't going to keep you in unless they really need to - they don't generally have the bed space!

GOod luck, hope it's not that serious and you're back posting later on.

Go now, btw.

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 14:05

ill have to have a shower and get someone here to mind the kids then get the bus, lol, buut yes i will go.

I would phone the out of hours doctors - if you phone your usual surgery, then there should be an answerphone message telling you the number. You'll be seen by a GP, who can then get you admitted directly to hospital, if that's what you need, or who can prescribe additional painkillers / medications if needed. A&E just means a long wait for you, and it's not the most appropriate place to go.

lowrib · 05/04/2010 14:13

Do go to the Dr, but do check if your Drs has an out of hours service first - it could save you a 5 hour wait!

Try calling your normal GP number, I expect you might get instructions on how to contact the out of hours GP, or you might even get put through to them.

With my last two GPs, if I call them out of hours I get put through automatically to the our of hours service. They then arrange an appointment if needed at the out of hours clinic, which for us is actually right next to casualty at the hospital. But instead of waiting 5 hours you get seen straight away, at your appointment time.

For us anyway, it's much quicker to be seen by the our of hours Dr than my normal GP!

Please do go, you should get checked out.

Cross-posts Mooglet!

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 17:21

Cause I've been fine today and I've just eaten toaast I'm goinbg to go to the GP in the morning.

Good luck for tomorrow

Disenchanted5 · 05/04/2010 22:36

Thankyou,

I've been OK tonight but that because I've had very little to eat because I'm scared of it happening.

All day I've had 1 piece of dry toast, 1 slice of bacon and about 10 plain potato wedges.

I feel a bit sick because I haven't eaten but hopefully the GP will be able to advise me tomorrow morning on what I can eat without setting it off.

Hiya,

quick update, my bloods have come back fine and I've got my simoidoscopy letter and its in only 10 days so thats great.

The GP has given me anti nausea tablets, antispasmonal tablets and also some painkillers for if I have another attck.

She thinks its IBS and has told me to have 4 small plain meals a day until we know what it is.

So feeling OK today bar the nausea but hopefully that should come under control with the tablets

x
