Says it all really! I am in Scotland, if that makes any difference. Been trying to get in touch with my GP this morning, but can't get an answer yet- had thought they would be open today, but shut Easter Monday? Thanks!

Mine, in NW England, is shut until Tuesday - when you call them you get a number for the Out Of Hours GP service.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 02/04/2010 09:12

I would expect them to be open here (Scotland). Good Friday is not a public holiday after all. If they are not open you should get an answer phone telling you how to contact NHS24.

fartmeistergeneral · 02/04/2010 09:12

I'm in Scotland too and ours is def open, they told me to phone today for test results!!

glasgowlass · 02/04/2010 09:12

I am in Glasgow and my GP surgery closed today and Monday. If it cant wait call NHS24 0845 4242424, they will help you out.

Snufflebufty · 02/04/2010 09:14

I'm also in Scotland and our GP surgeries are all closed til Tuesday. I only know this cos there was a piece on the radio on Wednesday about it. There should be an emergency number though I would have thought.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 02/04/2010 09:15

Hmm- mixed bag! I am getting the answer machine message telling me to call NHS 24, but not sure if they just haven't switched answer machine off yet! Will keep trying till 9.30, I think , then phone NHS 24. Bummer is, I stayed off work today, as I feel so ill(horrible pussy tonsils, high temp for 3d) because I thought if I didn't get my ass to the doc today, I'd have to wait until tues, as I don't really want to bother NHS 24 with it

Quite surprised they are shut Good Friday, tbh.

Ours open at 8.30 -it's a bit unusual for them not to be open at 9.15. Does the message say the surgery is closed? I think in the past ours would have said 'closed til Tuesday' or something.

What about going to a pharmacist?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/04/2010 09:19

Do you have a system where you can call the out of hours doctor instead of nhsdirect where you are? I'd try them at 9:30 instead.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/04/2010 09:19

sorry - saw where you are nhs24! (not awake yet

Joolyjoolyjoo · 02/04/2010 09:19

I know- I would have thought the message would have told me when they reopened! I never thought of a pharmacist- can they prescribe antibiotics now?

OP posts:
fartmeistergeneral · 02/04/2010 09:21

Actually, I'm not really sure about that - thought they might be able to relieve your symptoms somehow til Tuesday. If you have one handy it might be worth going and if they can't help you have no option but NHS24, then you won't feel so bad about phoning them cos you have tried the other options!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 02/04/2010 09:25

I just always feel a bit embarassed calling the OOH service when it's not an emergency as such. It's just that I have been struggling on with paracetamol for 3d now, and still have a horrible temperature- teeth chattering, shivering, then boiling hot, T38-ish. And my tonsils are enormous with what look like blisters all over them. Feel terrible in general. Don't think it's flu, as everyone else ok, so wasn't sure if I should be getting antibiotics for the tonsils. Never had tonsillitis in my life! But dd1 has frequent bouts, and usually needs antibiotics. As I say, though, it's not life and death, is it? Wish my GP was open

OP posts:
glasgowlass · 02/04/2010 09:48

It certainly sounds like tonsilitis! I used to get it all the time (about 8 episodes a year) until I had my tonsils removed aged 19.

You need antibiotics and it will have to be a doctor who prescribes them for you. You will not be bothering NHS24, that is what they are paid to do and the OOH surgeries are there for a reason and tonsilitis is reason enough for an appt!

If you leave it it will only get worse and believe me you dont want to develop a quinsy!. Tell the NHS24 staff about your temp fluctuations, struggling with paracetamol etc. Tonsilitis can turn nasty very quickly, my Mum is an ENT nurse and they get people in quite often with very swollen airways due to tonsilitis so it can be serious in some circumstances.

It wont do any harm to phone NHS 24!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 02/04/2010 09:51

With those symptoms after 3 days of paracetamol there is a good chance you have bacterial tonsillitis which would likely benefit from antibiotic. I don't think any OOH GP would begrudge seeing you. If nothing else they might give you stronger painkillers.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 02/04/2010 10:01

THanks guys- just had mammoth phone call with NHS 24, and the local OOH clinic is going to be phoning me back with an appt soon. Feel like a bit of an idiot, though- should have thought that GP might be shut today Lady on the phone was very nice and made me feel less of a silly Joe Public (although I'm sure they will roll their eyes behind my back!) Still, hopefully means I won't have to spend the Easter Weekend as a wreck!

The irony is that my dd is going to see an ENT specialist on tues about her tonsils, and neither DH nor I had ever had tonsillitis in our lives- apparently until now!

I hope you can be seen nice and quickly and get the relief you need.

fartmeistergeneral · 02/04/2010 10:23

Oh, that sounds awful, didn't realise your symptoms were so bad! Glad you phoned NHS24, hope you feel better!

glasgowlass · 02/04/2010 10:30

Hope you feel better soon! You have done the right thing & dont worry about them rolling their eyes behind your back, they save that for the folks who call NHS24 with a small splinter stuck in their thumb!

Hope all goes well on Tue for your DD.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 02/04/2010 14:20

Just back- yup, bacterial tonsillitis, so onto antibiotics. Hopefully they will kick in soon! I still feel a bit perplexed that I have developed tonsillitis for the first time at the grand old age of 37- I always thought it was something that children got/ people who had had it as children, but there you go!

Thanks all for your advice/ concern!
