Parents of boys

My DS, nearly 3, started howling about weeing today.

I wasn't sure what was the problem at first, but is seems at though it hurts when he is weeing in his nappy.

Last night he missed his bath. He usually has a bath, almost every night and now the morning after no bath he is having a problem!

Is this normal or should he see the GP?

Am I right to assume, boys' bits need to be clean and this will go away if I give him a bath with a bit of TCP in it?

Or what should I do?

Pop him to the GP, he could have an infection so it hurts when he wees.

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 18:52

OK, I wonder if the GP is open on Good Friday?

Can you phone the GP out of hours? They'll want to see him with a possible urine infection because they can feel poorly with it.
Have you tried NHS direct? They'll tell you whether to home treat or see the GP 0845 4647

I'd call the Out of hours or NHS direct to be honest and get him seen tonight, it sounds like he's in pain if he's crying when he's weeing. Do give him some paracetamol. I hope he's feeling better soon.

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 19:05

I'm calling! They are exceptionally busy, but the online initial assessment, having checked you aren't actually dying, doesn't seem to cover this particular ailment!

OP posts:
BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 01/04/2010 19:16

Stick with it. It sounds painful for him so he needs checking over.

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 19:19

He is currently in a warm bath with TCP in it, it seems a bit sensitive but he is happily playing in the bath right now. Got thru on the phone and waiting for a callback, altho not sure how long DS will stay in the bath and it might start hurting again afterwards. O should I put salt in the water too?

Might be a kidney infection or something, rather than something on his skin...? Don't try and pull his forskin back (as far as I know at this age).

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 01/04/2010 19:26

Don't do anything. Does his penis look red?

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 01/04/2010 19:27

Does it look rashy/sore? I would leave salt TBH for now incase it makes it dry and then more sore, unless you can see a cut or something? Is the water 'plain' and no soap/shampoo? Poor thing, it's awful when they are in pain x

thisisyesterday · 01/04/2010 19:31

it's more likely to be a UTI or something to be honest.

penises don't need cleaning at his age, and missing one bath won't have caused it.
i'd be wary of bathing him in tcp or anything like that tbh as it might aggravate it

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 19:31

I can't see any obvious redness or anything different.

Could you get him out of the bath please? The TCP will make it worse. It sounds like he has a UTI if there's no redness, sometimes they can get an infection of the foreskin, it goes red and it hurts to wee but as it's not red then it's more likely to be cystitis/urinary tract infection. He does need checking over by a doctor.

DinahRod · 01/04/2010 19:39

Is he weeing? If not, probably a UTI and needs seeing by the out of hours doc.

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 19:39

OK he is out! Hopefully the NHS direct nurse will call within 2 hours, Should I take him to A&E then?

OP posts:
BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 01/04/2010 19:41

I don't think it's an A&E job to be honest but if he's in real discomfort then take him, he'll need to do a urine sample either way.

Has he banged himself at all?

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 19:48

I don't think he has.

He seems happy enough right now. Thanks for helping. I'm sure the NHS direct nurse will tell me what to do!

I hope he's feeling better soon.

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 19:53

By the way, it was a reasonably deep bath with a little splash of TCP to kill any germs.

does he have a temp?

Dominique07 · 01/04/2010 19:54

Thanks!
