mirena coil??

Ive just come back from docs having requested to go on pill after a 15yr break - I've met a lovely bloke after long time out of the whole scene and obvioulsy need to sort the whole contraceptive issue out. The doc reccommended the mirena coil which sounded like the answer to my dreams I have come back and googled it and seen nothing but horror stories weight gain loss of sex drive (I sooooooo dont want that - ) pain constant spotting and bleeding after sex ( again not a pleasant thought) etc etc - so does anyone have any experience good or bad with this as I think I need to make another appt to discuss something else unless there are real positive experiences out there - for what its worth I'm 42 1 child and happy with her not planning on anyadditions thank you very much and periods are regular and normal every 3 - 4 months I get a heavy one but thats about it

Sorry, I found it a complete nightmare.

You either love it or hate it but it's really pushed on women over 35 who've completed child bearing.

Some places earn extra money by inserting Mirenas, too.

If the pill worked for you there's no reason you can't go back on it and try it first.

Never again, problem after problem. Had it fitted last sept, went docs who kept saying give it 6 months so i did. Had it removed 2 weeks ago still bleeding but nothing new as bled all the time on it anyway.
I had heavy period b 4 coil so nothing changed got worse if anything.
Have fibroids and polyps so why did they fit it in 1st place.
I put on about a stone. ive been on diet for 2 months and going gym 4 times a week 4 last 4 weeks and not lost a pound, so im just hopeing now ive had it removed the weight will come off.
Everyone is different,At least i gave it ago,

I had one for three years. I put on 1 stone in the first month of having it, and another in the month it came out. Have had virtually every single side-effect listed in the leaflet. The only positive thing about it (apart from no pregnancies) was no periods.

Forgot to say it took me 5.5 years to get pregnant after having it removed (having previously been extremely fertile) so nnot sure I could ever recommend it to anybody who might want to have another child (I know that you don't, but just wanted to mention it).

Loved mine! Didn't gain any weight or suffer any side effects. No periods for five years, not even the slightest spotting. The only reason I didn't replace it was that, sadly, I don't have a sex life any more! Still sometimes tempted to get another anyway just because it was so nice not having periods.

Sorry, another one who had a nightmare with mirena here. It is hassle-free contraception if you get on with it, as many women clearly do, but there is a possibility of side effects (in my case prolonged depression/anxiety and psoriasis, all of which cleared up after I had it taken out). I did continue to have periods but they were very light. It's really easy to have it removed - the GP can do it and it takes a few seconds - so maybe it's worth trying?

Have had no problems with mine - and great not to have to think about it.

As for loss of sex drive - I have 2 small children and am still breastfeeding one of them so no idea whether the coil is to blame

I get the mirena propaganda every time I see the GP (I fall into that category mentioned by expat) and I get thoroughly sick of it. They get extra payments for insertion and 'counselling'. Since that counselling appears (from previous threads on this) to include dissuading you from having it removed should you have any problems, then I won't agree to have it.

Having said that, some obviously get on well with it.

PS - one of my main reasons for refusal is that, although well into my 40s, my periods, like yours, are still regular and normal. Part of the 'mirena lecture' is that it will lighten and regularise (or even virtually eliminate) the heavy, infrequent problem periods that doctors seem to assume that all those of us over 40 have. But if you don't particularly have a problem then it seems to me that, firstly, you don't need a 'solution' and, secondly, the possible side effects of mirena - which can include frequent 'spotting' (however light) or (like the mini-pill) no period for ages and then a sudden unexpected one, could well be worse than your normal cycle and certainly worse than one on the pill.

I have had it for 3 years and love it. Have no side effects and still have a very light period most months.

I have four other friends who have it and none of them have suffered any side effects either. 3 have had their periods ceased completely and 1 has a light bleed like me each month.

It is a bit of a decision to make as opinions and experiences are so polarised. Good luck with it.

I've had mine for 4 years and no problems at all. I initally bled for about 5 weeks but totally settled down. I have a very light bleed every month. It's the best thing I've done as I can't go on the pill and I hate condoms.

Am very happy with mine although the bleeding in the first couple of months was a bit of a nuscience. Initially there was a tendency for me to blame any weight gain or moodiness I had on it but I've lost the weight again and TBH I'm a moody bugger regardless! I'd have another at the end of 5 years quite happily. It doesn't suit everyone though and if you've had any major side effect from progesterone-based contraceptives then you may well not get on with it.

Hated it, and I still haven't shifted all the extra 2 stone I gained in three months. (Had many other side effects too.)

i loved it and had it in for 3 yrs before i started ttc my 2nd child and had no periods for 2.5yrs. FAB!!! but the downside for me was my breasts...it was permantly sooo tender, sore and heavy for three solid weeks every month for 3 yrs so yes i did put up with it cos of period free. Now im on Copper coil, its not bad as i do have very heavy periods for 3 days and my breasts becomes tender for a week before my AF arrived!! but not as bad as i was on the mirena coil. As soon as i came off the mirena coil, the next day my breasts went back to normal.

I've got an appointment to have one fitted tomorrow - have also been a bit worried by the love/hate stories.

But I've been on cerazette (progesterone pill) for a few yrs and suits me fine. It's the same hormone in Mirena - so I thought that if I'm OK on cerazette, I'll be ok on Mirena. Have any of you with Mirena hate stories previously been OK on a progesterone pill?

(I want to swap to coil as don't want to worry about forgetting to take pill scenarios)

You might be fine with it though

Ive had mirena coil in for 3 years and its a god send in my opinion.
No periods atall
had no weight gain
still got great sex drive
AND I DIDNT GET ANY UNWANTED PREGNANCY

Im getting mine removed 23 april so i can start tryin for DC3 but after reading it has affected someones fertility im slightly worried. Hope that doesnt happen to me.

and after hopefully having DC3 will get another mirena fitted.

I got pregnant on the pill and injection i put a stone on and mood swings were dreadful.

but every woman is different you will either love it or hate it!

taken4granted I went ahead and had mine fitted yesterday, after getting reassurance that they would agree to remove it if it didn't work out. They said they preferred people to give it 4-6 months to 'settle down' before removal, but would remove it immediately if I insisted.

Insertion was fine, I had a tiny bit of cramping and slightly tender breasts last night. Little bit of bleeding (really very little) straight after insertion, but none today. So, I think my opinion would be to give it a try as it is a simple procedure, easily reversible, and benefits might be great.

I AM TERRIFIED NOW! I've been on the pill(Cilest) for last 3 years and I've put about 2,5 stone on Had terrible mood swings and just hated my body. I decided I need different form of contraception and went for Mirena,hoping that will help me lose weight ( I still do). I've only hadmy coil for a week now, so can't really say anything about it.Just wanted to ask if there is anyone who have been on the pill and switched to coiland it aaaaaaaaaaallll just got better? I really hope it will work.Thank you!!

could go for the copper coil ? not marina ... i had one for 4 years fab no probs at all .

no hormones in copper one so still get periods (which was a bummer ) but no other side effects like bleeding ,spotting , weight gain , etc

if your periods not to bad , may be an option ..
