My little dd (nearly three) was sick at five a.m on Thursday morning, nothing else happened for ages, she seemed fine, and then bad diarrhoea at about 3.p.m. seemed ok again, then vomited at bedtime.Slept through Thursday night, normal poo Friday afternoon, thought she was better but then looked much more ill again at suppertime, more Diarrhoea and vomiting at bedtime,so more than 24 hrs later.Up a few times in the night, last at 2 a.m. then nothing more.Off colour today but eating a bit (e.g. ricecakes) nothing from either end again until bedtime when her temp went up (as it had last night ) and she was very sick again. She is asleep now but gut is gurgly and I think she may be up again. Is this usual,to go 16 or even 24 hours and then have more vomiting or diarrhoea? Do bugs like this go on and on? I have been lucky as my older DD is five and I have never had to deal with the runs, and only twice with puke!

Should add she is still breastfed at night and in the morning, don't know if this makes any difference?

Poor you (and poor her). We have had "bugs" like this when you maybe go 12-24 hours without symptoms then they can recur again.

I think that this is why most schools etc specifcy that you should stay home until at least 48 hours after the last episode of sickness/diarrhoea.

hellymelly · 27/03/2010 21:11

My only experience of vomiting bugs is that they are gone in 24 hours or less,so this seemed odd-also not sure whether DD1 and the rest of us are likely to get it,kept dd1 off school on Thursday and Friday so she wouldn't either pass it on or be ill in school but she is still right as rain.

Just continue to observe good hygiene (e.g. handwashing etc) and if necessary ring GP/NHS direct for further advice.

I once had a sickness bug lasting about 2 weeks. (years ago). The GP (my mother phoned him) said that it was a particularly nasty long-lived virus and loads of local people had it.

Obviously yours is unlikely to go on that long.

Sounds like ds (3) has something like this.

He was sick on Thursday morning after breakfast then slept for about 3hours which is really unlike him. He was a bit shivery as well although only had a slight temp. After he woke up though he was running around and seemed fully recovered. Poos a bit loose but wouldn't call it diarrhoea.

Fine Thursday night, fine Friday morning but then a bit sick again on Friday afternoon - immediately fine afterwards though. Then he was up twice in the night being very sick.

This morning he was right as rain. Lay down and said he felt sick midmorning but nothing came up. Eating normally, running round like a mad thing. Poos still a bit loose.

Am totally but really hoping that it's run its course now..

hellymelly · 27/03/2010 21:29

Yes that does sound similar.I know there is a diarrhoea bug locally (We are in West Wales ) as Several children nearby seem to have it but they aren't vomiting (older children though)

How was your dd last night helly?

Ds was sick again this morning - well over 24 hours since the last time, although it was around the same time as yesterday morning when he said he felt sick but just lay down for a bit.

Otherwise he's 100% himself. Weird.

SusieKettles · 28/03/2010 10:35

I guess nursery's out tomorrow as I think they've got a 48hr exclusion period for d&v so I'm extremely aprehensive about this potentially lasting a fortnight...

bellissima · 28/03/2010 18:57

I had the 'v' nine days ago - and I've still got the 'd'. Very gradually getting better but my stomach still churns after I eat.

However - my darling DCs (from whom I caught the big) had v for about 24 hours, then d for about a day and a half, then were absolutely fine. grrrr. So I guess it just depends. Friend of mine also much worse than her DCs.

bellissima · 28/03/2010 18:57

sorry - bug - though in my case big bug!

onepieceoflollipop · 28/03/2010 20:02

Sorry Susie and helly, didn't mean to frighten you with my talk of 2 weeks. It is most unusual to suffer for so long, very unlikely (I hope) but it did happen to me.

I was trying to be reassuring in my post, i.e kind of trying to say that d&v can run for far longer than 24-48 hours, and it isn't necessarily a sign that something terribly serious is happening.

I wish all of you a speedy recovery.

SusieKettles · 28/03/2010 20:07

These things take as long as they take I guess.

Ds isn't quite "right" tonight. Quite swollen stomach and very gurgly/windy so there's still some bacterial/viral activity going on.

Just hope there's no more vom . Not sure the washing machine will cope.

(Oh and the marvelous hubris of me saying I'd never missed having a tumble drier on a thread last week. Eating. My. Words. )

onepieceoflollipop · 28/03/2010 20:09

At least you are still eating.

SusieKettles · 28/03/2010 20:43

Oh god, I haven't even thought about it spreading to me. Noooooooo I'm such a rubbish sick person.

hellymelly · 29/03/2010 22:09

Well my dd has been better today,no vomit since yesterday morning although( like your ds Susiekettles)swollen tum and very gurgly and windy still last night. She had a panic after bf at bedtime and thought she was going to be sick (she was the same last night)but she was fine,I think any little gurgles or twinges are frightening her now, poor thing.I posted on the tumble drier thread too,and this was the first time that I thought ....maybe it would be handy! our radiators are covered in clothes and I have been thanking the Lord for my Miele washing machine! So far all the rest of us are fine, although dh and I felt a bit green at one point,it could have just been lack of sleep.

Ds was very sick again not long after I posted last night. I kept him off nursery and he was absolutely full of beans all day, eating normally etc.

Dh & I had plans to go out tonight and swithered about calling off the babysitter but as it was a close friend and ds's favourite person in the world decided to go ahead, with full disclosure, as we would only be 10 mins away. No problems. Touch wood, we seem to be past it too.

I think I'll keep him off nursery tomorrow too though just to be on the safe side.

I'm glad your dd is feeling better too helly. It's horrid when they're not well.

hellymelly · 30/03/2010 14:33

Yes,glad to hear your Ds is on the mend too.Vomiting is so horrible for them and I always worry about dehydration, poor dd was just producing water from each end!
