Help please! 4yo with sickness bug and 6 day old baby in house.

This is my worst nightmare (well, almost)

My 4yo DD has woken in the night with a sickness bug - vomit everywhere. Ordinarily this would be something we would just deal with and get over, but the problem is we have a 6 day old baby and I'm recovering from a c-section.

Can anyone offer advice on what to do if my baby gets the bug? She's formula fed, although had one day's breast feeding initially.

Obviously we'll keep the sick one away from the baby as much as possible and we're practising good hygiene (anti bac soap, hand gel etc...) but I'm so worried about the baby being ill.

Thanks for looking

there isnt much you can do apart from what you are, keep clean - keep cleaning all the surfaces etc

try not to worry too much, you're doing everything you can.

but trust your instincts and if you think little one is getting ill, i'd say phone nhs direct straight away and take some official advice. they call back pretty quickly when it's v small baby. at the very least they could put your mind at rest.

Poor you. V&D bug is nasty. My DD has had it twice in 2 months.

GP told me that V&D bug lives on surfaces but is also airborne. Nice! Its just like regular flu.

Also told that your immunity to it only last two weeks and then you can get it again.

GP also said to keep giving DD milk and lots of sips of water. Until it had passed.

I think you may have to prepare for the whole house getting it.

If the baby gets it, I'd phone GP (surgery or our of hours) immediately. Also NHS direct for any additional advice.

Dehydration is the issue for young babies so constantly keeping an eye on them.

Also see NHS website for signs of dehydration in babies. I found it useful and reassuring. Also found it reassuring to speak to GP and Out of Hours doctor on phone.

All the best to you.

A quick update.

It's now 60 hours since DD1 first vomited and we've kept her away from DD2 (the week old baby) until now. She was last sick yesterday at about 6am. Basically, she seemed to be totally off colour for about 36 hours but is now onthe road to recovery and has been keeping food/drink down since yesterday.

We've been scrupulous about hygiene and so far no-one else in the house has had it, although I'm well aware that I may be tempting fate here!

Here's hoping we've seen the back of this nasty little bug!
