Have occasional excruciating pain in my rectum now and again, although have had it 3 times so far this year, which is unusual, usually twice a year or something (for about 3 years). However, it happened after jogging each time this year - twice I came in from jogging, had an explosion of diarrohea and it was all blood - then the pain. This week I had the diarrohea/blood but no pain, but extreme discomfort the following day and is still a bit weird. Also, quite windy - but when I poo after the pain (sometimes next day) the poo seems quite normal, not constipated, or hard poo.

Have seen doctor and have a referral to get a camera shoved up. Mmmm.. Am now terrified it's colon/bowel cancer. I know no-one can say for definite just now, but can anyone think of anything else it can be?

IBS and celeac (sp??) don't seem to fit as the symptoms aren't blood splatterings.

ulcerative or ischemic colitis can cause those symptoms.

will check them out when I get home from work, thanks

Unlikely to be cancer as the symptoms have been going on for a while - if it was cancer you would probably know by now/have other symptoms like pain/weight loss etc.

Hope the colonoscopy can put your mind at rest.

There are a very wide range of potental causes of rectal bleeding.

Given the amount of blood loss it could be Diverticulosis. If so, it needs treating promptly. Another MNetter recently wrote a thread about her DH having it.

If the bleeding becomes severe (i.e large volume) or frequent you must go to A&E immedately. Go with someone - do not drive yourself there.

There are many other relatvely minor things though that it could be.

will check out these suggestions - damn hypochondria! Thought I had it all under control!

Make sure they do a CT scan too. My father had the colonoscopy done, not entirely foolproof. It was the CT scan that revealed far more. If it is cancer, the markers will be in your blood, make sure this is done!

fartmeistergeneral · 25/03/2010 15:31

Flook, I have had blood tests done, would they automatically check the blood for cancer?

OP posts:

Not necessarily. Ask your GP or consultant, they are called CA markers.

FlookCrow · 25/03/2010 17:12

And as the other posters have suggested, many other things can cause the symptoms you have described Don't worry, but do get it checked out as much as possible. You're doing everything a responsible adult should!

And don't forget to ask what it is if it isn't cancer!

purplepeony · 25/03/2010 18:41

I think it's unlikely to be colon cancer- TBH it tends to be an older person's disease, though not always.
Sounds more like diverticulitis or some sort of ulcerative colitis.
It could also be severe internal piles- did your dr examine you at all?
