Diabetes (adult onset)

Last year my doctor wanted me to have a fasting blood test for diabetes, I cant remember why, but I cancelled it because of one thing and another. I have had really poor health for a few years now as I have fibromyalgia.

In February, I had my gall bladder out due to large gall stones. The wound didnt heal that quickly and I had to go back to the doctor because of this. We discussed how I had had the same problem after my hysterectomy. I went back to the doctors, saw a different doctor today about thrush and the first thing he said was that he wanted me to have the fasting blood test as repeated thrush is a symptom of diabetes. I am going to go ahead with the test this time as I have been feeling rubbish for ages and I thought you never know this might be it. But then I thought, well if I had diabetes wouldnt they have picked it up in hospital when I had my gall bladder out? I was admitted as an emergency and in for about a week in all, had urine tests and several blood tests. You would have thought if I had diabetes it would have shown up at least in the ward's routine urine test. By the way, yes Im overweight and middle aged so I suppose Im high risk for this.

What do you think? Wouldnt it have shown up in routine tests at the hospital?

Unless they tested specifically for glucose in hospital then it is unlikely. It is not a routine pro op blood that is done.

Urine test again, only if it tested for glucose. Sometimes it tests only for protein and blood.

So its not unusual for it not to be picked up if you had no symptoms and they were not lokking for it.

Thank you Mrs JM.

One of the things that bothers me is that I sometimes go all wobbly if I delay having breakfast, or miss a meal. Sort of trembly I suppose. I realise that this could be low blood sugar, but I suppose it could just be me or low blood pressure or something.

I have the test on Friday morning, but wondered if there was any point to buying one of those urine dip stick things in the mean time because its worrying me.

If it's worrying you, phone the surgery tomorrow morning and ask if they can see you sooner. Don't sit at home worrying and a shop bought test won't necessarily have the clinical accuracy. Good luck!

I had my fasting glucose test yesterday but was a bit surprised to find that the result wont be back for a week.

Im feeling really vile at the moment, sweating, no energy, easily tired, nauseated. Yesterday I had to go to bed mid morning I felt so bad and slept until early afternoon.

Its nothing really acute enough to go to the emergency doctor or anything (its saturday) but I need to get to the bottom of it. I suppose it might just be a virus.

Update: The result was 5.5, normal. I think I was feeling vile because of a virus.
