Scarring? Vitamin E or biooil

Hi

My 12 year old has had surgery on his arm. The scarring is extensive, elbow to wrist both sides. The scar that leads into the crook of his elbow has contracted a little leading to further difficulty in straightening his arm. he is having physio and seeing the consultant regularly.

Anyway, I was going to use the oil from vitamin E capsules which many years ago I was taught helped scarring, however the physio has suggested bio oil.

Any thoughts/experiences welcomed.

Thank you

I'd go with bio oil.

I used it throughout my pregnancy and after and only had a few small stretch marks develop and I've continued to use the bio oil and they've almost gone.

It is a slow process and for best result should be used about 3 times a day, which makes it very expensive, because bio oil is not cheap. During my 9 month pregnancy I must have easily spent about £100 on bio oil!

Neat Lavender oil is fantastic on scar tissue.

Bio oil
used this after surgery to remove a melanoma on my face
everyone has commented on how smooth and pale the scar is. No raised bits or redness at all
Its great stuff and whilst not cheap I admit you don't need to lather it on.

Thanks everyone. It appears that for some people Vit E increases scarring so bio oil it is!

I don't think Bio Oil is all it's cracked up to be, I've been using it for about 5 years and it has had no effect on scar tissue, I just use it as a moisturiser now.

4 weeks ago I started using a product called "Kelo-Cote". It's recommended by hospitals and available on NHS prescription, however, the "Associate" at my surgery dismissed it as being available on NHS.

I've been using it on my C-Section scar half of which is Keloid, raised and itchy and I can see the improvement already. The manufacturers say visible improvement can be seen in 90 days and one tube of the gel should last that time. It cost about £30 for the small tube.

on my c-section scar I was given a silicone tape, about 4mm thick to put on every day, under that a cream to help heal the scar (cannot remember but contained calendula).

You should ask in a well-stocked pharmacy for that silicone tape, it helps to prevent keloid forming and has been fantastic. Just take it off before having a shower and then back on when you've dried the arm.

Would also recommend rose oil, had a bad scar right under my eye from a cat claw and nothing there now. Was a tiny deep red tube bought in a pharmacy, too.

Hope your child gets better soon.
