Advice about treatment following an abnormal smear and period ishoos since....Possibly TMI!

In November I had treatment for some abnormal cells that showed on a coloscopy (sp) Can't remember the name of the treatment, but it's the one where they burn the cells out....anyway since then at the beginning of each period I get a dark brown/black discharge for a couple of days, almost like bits of blood clots, before my 'proper' period starts, which seems much heavier and seems to last for longer than before I had treatment. I have asked the doc's who said that it's unlikely to have anything to to with the treatment but to book an appointment to have an examination.

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same treatment, and if you experienced anything similar? TBH it's really worrying me, anything 'down there' does. Thanks, and sorry for TMI

Did you have the LLETZ treatment to take out a piece of your cervix and remove the dodgy cells?

BattyKoda · 20/03/2010 21:37

I don't think so (awful that I can't remember!) I can remember them saying they burnt out the abnormal cells, not sure if it was part of my cervix though, hand on I'll see if I've still got the info....

Yes, it was LLETZ treatment meglet.

Obviously the cells were attached to my cervix.

Well, I had 2 LLETZ treatments in 04/ 05 and they had to remove quite a large number of cells (cervix) to get all the nasty bits out. Following that my periods got very painful and heavy and the blood seemed to take longer to come out and only come out in big blobs (yay for TMI!). Got pg after a few months then in labour it turned out my cervix was almost completely scarred up and wouldn't dilate in a month of sundays and had em cs.

So it turned out I had cervical stenosis following the LLETZ treatment as the cervix had tightened and narrowed, hence my periods becoming painful and big clots of blood. It is very rare though and only became apparent when I wouldn't dilate in labour. I think I only got pg by doing handstands , the colposcopy nurse said it was impressive I managed to get pg.

However IIRC it is more common for the cervix to become 'looser' after LLETZ treatment, and even that doesn't happen to everyone.

Oh, I've prattled on a bit haven't it? You might be able to find out more if you can get another colposcopy so they can see the cervix just in case it is too tight, mine was visibly distorted afterwards.

Sorry if I've panicked you, I've had almost 6 years of it and have talked about it so much it's like second nature .

I had the same treatment about 8 years ago.
I did have probs with my periods for a few months afterwards and they were much heavier than before, but they did get a bit better after a while.
But I do think its worth getting checked out properly.

Fertility thing is exactly what I'm worried about. We're hoping to try for DC3 in a few months.

Thank you so much for replying though! And sorry you've had sucha hard time with it. Perhaps I'll call the womens unit to see if they can help, my GP was quite dismissive.

Pannacotta, I really hope they get better, I've never had them so bad... haven't managed to leave the house today

...just remembered that my gynaecologist spoke about possibly having a treatment to dilate the cervix if it never got better, but I got pregnant after that. And that the reason my periods were very painful was because my womb was contracting hard to push the blood out of the tight cervix. I was often off work for a day or so as it was so bad, prepared me for labour though .

Pannacotta · 20/03/2010 22:06

Am sure they will get better, I do remember feeling like crap after I had the treatment and being quite shocked as they downplayed possible side effects before I agreed to the treatment (was borderline case for needing it as only had mild case of dodgy cells).

On a happier note I got pregnant very easily with DS1 and 2 (in fact was using contraception when DS1 was conceived!) so hope you have the same experience Batty.

A hot water bottle and couple of Ibuprofen should help a bit....

BattyKoda · 20/03/2010 22:12

Thank you - they downplayed the treatment to me too, they didn't even tell me it would be done with anaesthetic! They just said it takes a bit longer than the colposcopy!
