I'd go to GP on Monday.

Could be Crohn's or ulcerative colitis, partic if he's underweight.

Does he still have diarrhoea?

bobblehat · 19/03/2010 21:54

Sorry, I'm no expert but I'm sure I've heard somewhere that fresh bright red blood in stools is less worrying than dark dried blood.

Under the circumstances (teenager talking to mum about poo) I'd certainly either call NHS direct or get him up to a and e. Has it been as bad as this for a while, or has it suddenly tonight got a lot worse? if the second, then I'd get him seen tonight.

Sorry, not particurly helpful, but didn't want this go go unanswered

Yes it's been ongoing for couple of years sometimes better than others ironically at it's best when on large amounts of steroids for his asthma

Yes had wondered and way he came down was shook up and he's not normally one to worry or panic
Was just the amount that concerned me but no pain

Think will be taking him Monday. Push gor padx appoinmrnt

If he's been pooing four times a day for some time it may well be piles. But yes do go get it checked out. There must be a reason he is going so often and that should also be addressed.

Phoenix4725 · 19/03/2010 22:01

Never this amount odd bit couple oc 50 p drops size but this was a lot

Yeah Did wonder if should though not sure what they could do ifs stopped. Ow and no pain otherwise would. Een straight up there

Steroids sort out inflammation. I was on them (oral) for weeks with a UC flare up, so if it is UC or Crohn's it will improve with steroids.

Bleeding can look worse than it is, but he needs a blood test to check for anaemia if it's been going on a while as well as a thorough check by your GP with a referral to a gastro-enterologist.

Phoenix4725 · 19/03/2010 22:04

He's not been straining though as he puts if it's like a tap when he goes just glad he feels can talk to me now how to explain some Drs going to want look up there

poor boy

There's no escaping that it's very unpleasant and embarrassing, but treatment that will make him feel a whole lot better.

hi hun, first of all im not a doctor anything like this needs a doctors attention, my husband had the same in his twenties, he had no pain blood was bright red and there was mucus like substance and a lot of blood and nothing else, it turned out he had ruptured piles and had to go in hospital as a day patient too have his rectum stretched and was put on a high fibre diet and as funny as it sounds this procedure worked he hasnt suffered since hes now 49 years old.

MegBusset · 22/03/2010 22:29

Sounds like it could well be ulcerative colitis (I had a bout of it a few years ago) -- loose stools, mucus and blood in stool can all be symptoms, also weight loss as the gut doesn't absorb nutrients well during UC flare-ups. Steroids can reduce the inflammation and relieve symptoms.

Did he go to the GP today? When I went, the doc had a poke around then I was referred to hospital for a biopsy. You get used to strangers sticking things up your bum pretty quickly!
