Clenching jaw?

I went to the dentist yest (see other thread about sedation!!) and she explained that my sore mouth was actually me clenching my jaw a lot?

I am totally unaware that I am doing it but i do have lots of jaw/ear/neck pains . Sometimes it is very very painful and whilst I am glad my teeth are ok I feel a bit grrr at the pain not having an easy solution...

Does anyone else do this? How can I stop?

Thanks

Unfortunately I can't tell you how to stop (I wish!) but just wanted to sympathise, as I do this all the time and have done ever since I was little. It's shit and has certainly contributed to the rubbishness of my teeth, as well as giving me countless headaches.

Sometimes I find deliberate relaxation exercises can help, when I'm awake anyway. Haven't found anything that works while I'm asleep though...

i got told this a fortnight ago - unfortunately it actually turns out that ive got a bit of root left in from my wisdom teeth and have a massive infection in my jaw. i had to go back to dentist on Thursday whre they took Xrays and it showed why im in such pain!

did she take Xrays?

if not id have some done to be sure its not something else.

Yes she took x-rays and they were fine.

It is a funny pain really, it can radiate up into the side of my head as well, very achey and annoying.

hi hun, i had the same thing about 6 months ago, its called bruxism your dentist can give you a special gumshield to wear at night while sleeping ,it will protect your teeth, also just a thought my teeth clenching was due to medication i was on for depression, that was causing me to clench my teeth at night sometimes in the day too, so if your taking medication check this out, once i stopped my medication my teeth clenching stopped hope this info helps.

I was reading an article about bruxism recently - often attributed to stress and/or medication but can also be caused by minor misalignment of teeth. Dentist should be able to help, but relaxation techniques might help too -depends on whats causing it for you. My DP is an occasional night grinder of teeth - makes an awful noise, but he's not aware of doing it.

I am a jaw clencher and a teeth grinder in my sleep. I too have the neck, jaw and head pains.

I had a gum shield made which I now only wear at times of stress. My dentist also prescribed me 2mg diazapam as a muscle relaxant because my jaw muscles were so tight. I have found both of these help but dont eradicate it altogether
