Ok, lie him down on his back over your knees, try holding tissue at his nose, theres not much u can do really apart from trying to keep his head back, but be very careful that lying him on his back is not causing any breathing dificultys

jybay · 18/03/2010 19:03

If he'll let you, squeeze his nostrils together firmly for 10 minutes. If this doesn't stop the bleeding then you need to take him to A&E.

Don't panic though - nosebleeds always look terrible but usually stop quickly.

Nointhemood · 18/03/2010 19:04

he wont let me near him arraggggghhh blood everywhere i guess theres going to be a battle of wills

Sorry, disagree with lying him back on your knee - this will make him choke on the blood. If possible (difficult with a 2 year old I know), get him to sit with his head forward. Put him in a sitting position on your lap.

jybay · 18/03/2010 19:07

If he won't let you near him, you'll just have to give it 10 minutes and see how he is. It will almost certainly have stopped.

If it does stop, don't give him a bath tonight - steam may set it off again.

Nointhemood · 18/03/2010 19:08

ok i can get him sitting forward by getting him to clean up the blood on the floor sounds cruel but he loves cleaning!!!!

Squeeze bone at top if possible.
Keep head forward over sink/bowl to let blood flow out.
No head back, laying down-could choke!

Don´t poke & pull clot out!

bumpybecky · 18/03/2010 19:10

put him in the bath!

perferably without water in (makes the blood look much worse!) it's easier to contain the mess and clean up afterwards

hope it stops soon

jybay · 18/03/2010 19:10

Cold's good if he'll let you. Squeezing is best (the soft lower bit of the nose - people often squeeze too high up) but I guess that may get in the way of his cleaning .

Nointhemood · 18/03/2010 19:11

its like theres lots up his noes a bit of clotting although its stopped it looks like it could run at any minute bit like a runny noes he's covered and seems oblivious!

If you're not too busy with a mop, this is useful

Try to stop him from picking/blowing.

Try to keep him quiet so it doesn´t start again.

diddl · 18/03/2010 19:20

Sorry, but I have to say that I am that anyone thinks lay them down/head back.

Apart from choking, the swallowing of blood could lead to vomiting.

Nointhemood · 18/03/2010 19:23

ok thankyou ladies its finally stopped and he has just realised he's got all this yucky blood over him had to show him in the mirror so he has just let me clean him up he hates being dirty. Just gave him a cold drink as his mouth was all bloody too can't belive how much blood poured out! will he be ok to go to bed in a minute do you think or should i keep an eye on him hopefully he will sleep on his side...I guess at least he's cleaned up after himself little darling
Will look at the website in a bit.

I think its very confusing when they keep changing the advice though thats why im never sure what to do1 Plus its even harder when youve got an unwilling toddler think he's going to be prone to bleeds so better do some research i think its just the amount of blood that comes out freaks me out!!!

OP posts:
jybay · 18/03/2010 19:32

To be fair, I don't think the advice has changed. This has always been the "official" advice but for some reason lots of people think you should pinch the nose at the top.

In children, nosebleeds almost always start at the part of the septum (divider between the nostrils) just inside the nostrils, which is why you need to squeeze that bit. Squeezing squashes the blood vessels and stops them bleeding.

I'd put a towel over his pillow tonight if I were you. He will almost certainly rub the nostril in the night because it will feel all crusty, which may start the bleeding off again.

Putting a dab of vaseline just inside the nostril helps prevent re-bleeding.

Nointhemood · 18/03/2010 19:41

ah thankyou good idea
