Anyone know anything about Absessed Tooth

just after a bit of advice really if anyone can help put me at ease, I had a filling in my wisdom tooth 2 weeks ago as it hasnt fully come through and skin still covers back so bacteria had built up and i had a small hole in my tooth.

I had the filling and then last weekend my jaw started aching a bit and it felt like it was a a throb radiating from that tooth so went back to dentist and he said that filling was still intact and put some strange orange gum type stuff on it and said it should settle.

I didnt really feel anything yesterday but today my jaw has been aching on that side at back again all day and ears aching a bit too. Do you think this could be an infection from tooth? an absess? or maybe something else?

Have rang my dentist and left a message as theyre shut.

Ideas???

It does sound like it could be an absess, for which you need anit-biotics. Do you have an emergancy dentist number, or a walk in centre near by?

i have a number for the emergency dentist and have a walk in nhs centre which am i best going to?? how do they know it may be an absess do they do an xray of tooth??

AS I said pain not really from tooth but my jaw???!!

Have just spoke to emergency dentist line and they said to alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol and make sure i speak to dentist first thing and see them b4 the weekend as if its infected/absess i need to start antibiotics asap.

How bad are absesses if thats what it is?? Do you think I would need my tooth out?? I dont like dentists at all so less work the better and i do have a slight problem with room in my mouth with teeth so maybe if i had to have it out wouldnt be too bad??!!!

I tend to panic when its my teeth anyone put my mind at ease??

I had an abcess which was calmed down for a while with painkillers and antibiotics. But it flared up big-time a few weeks after I'd given birth to DD, at which point I went to the dentist and he did some sort of draining process. Haven't had any problems for the last 11 years.

So my advice would be, get the painkillers and ABs short term but DO go and see your dentist soon.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 18/03/2010 18:48

An abcessed tooth will keep causing you trouble. It will flare up, you take anti-b's, it calms down, it flares up again and so on. You really need to have it either root-filled or extracted, depending on where it is, how badly decayed it is and of course cost and effort on your part. For the pain in the meantime Ibuprofen alternated every 2 hours with paracetamol is supposed to help. The sooner you see a dentist the better. A emergency dentist can put some stuff in it to kill of any remaining nerver and infection and give you a temporary filling. This should help with the pain but don't just leave it at that. Arrange to get it sorted properly if you can.

Thanks am taking both ibuprofen and paracetamol tonight and will ring dentist first thing. I have left a message and they usually get back to you straight away but will ring first thing anyway and they are good with appointments too rang monday bout filling and they saw me tuesday so hopefully can get in 2moro or sat am.

Thanks everyone its soo difficult to figure out whats wrong when its near jaw and ear cos it could be soo many things so will have to see. I maybe back on here tomorrow?! xx

if you thought childbirth was painful then a tooth abcess will be much worse when its in full swing.

get antibiotics now and rinse your mouth with salt water every hour.

LynetteScavo · 19/03/2010 15:41

How are you?

A dentist once told me an absess is the only real dental emergancy.

I once had one, and was up all night with the pain. Dreadful...but I think child birth still wins. Just.

Amandoh · 19/03/2010 15:49

How are you today?

I was due to have two of my wisdom teeth taken out as there wasn't enough room for them to grow through properly.

While waiting for the appointment one of them developed an abcess. The pain was awful but I found very cold water eased the pain for a few minutes when it was especially bad. Maybe you could try sipping icy water to ease the pain if it's no better now.

Also, my friend had one but her dentist lanced it and she said she could feel the pain almost flood away. Don't know if that's an option for you?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/03/2010 16:04

I agree with moocowme, tooth abscess was worse at times than childbirth.

I had my tooth out, it was that or a root canal and they said there was no guarantee it wouldn't flare up again. There was no way I was going to risk that pain again so the tooth went.

hi everyone sorry for late update been at work! Dentist saw me straight away this morning he asked lots of q's and poked around for ages and then took an xray. Huge relief everyone no absess YEAH!! Apparently ive strained my jaw ligaments. I used to have a clicky jaw and so have had problems before but it hurt like hell this time.

He says to carry on taking the ibuprofen, give it as much rest as poss ie, no talking when not needed and a soft food diet only. I have an appointment for in a weeks time to see if its got better yet. He also said to start doing my exercises i used to do before when it was clicking as it helps.

Still hurting but its not too bad when i get up so rest rest rest.
