DD1 has the dreaded pox (first noticed it on Monday). Some of her spots have gone crusty, some still have liquidy centres, but the vast majority are just red bumps. Will all of the red bumps become pustules or will some just go away? We're going to be stuck indoors forever if we have to wait for them all to progress to scabs...

It can last up to four weeks I think but you don't need to stay at home, just keep away from anyone who hasn't had it or who is receiving chemotherapy.

MrsHappy · 18/03/2010 15:48

Four weeks? That's the first time I have heard anything that long!

But I think that's the worst it can get. My ds got it when he was 9 months and it lasted about 10 days.

Ledodgy · 18/03/2010 15:50

They normally scab over by 7 days. Occasionally they scab but the scab remains moist iyswim usually in the nappy area on a younger child and these can last longer but wil no longer be contagious. New blisters tend to stop coming out after about 4-5 days.

MrsHappy · 18/03/2010 15:51

But what about the wee red blobs? Will they all turn into blisters?

OP posts:
Ledodgy · 18/03/2010 15:54

Yes usually but you can get some that don't blister they may have blistered and gone down already. Usually if a red bump appears it blisters within 24 hours so if they are reasonably new red bumps then yes they may still blister.

Ledodgy · 18/03/2010 15:56

IME Day 4 is often the worst for spots. DD and ds2's day 4 was on Christmas day and I couldn't believe that night when I stripped them off for a bath how many spots they had since the day before!

MrsHappy · 18/03/2010 16:22

Goodness knows whether there are many new ones or not... poor child must have at least 300, but only a few are blisters today and most are tiny dots. Good news that some might not go that way - I really hope she doesn't get many more blisters as it seems to be those that itch. And naturally she doesn't want lotion...she's in the bath a LOT!

Bless her. If she gets any on her throat or her eyes ring the gp and as she will need anti virals. My dd needed these and they are fab.

MrsHappy · 18/03/2010 16:33

On her eyes? She has one on her eyelid - does that count?

Poor love also has an ear infection (with disgusting goo). This is not a good week!

OP posts:
Ledodgy · 18/03/2010 16:35

No that should be ok but they can sometimes get them in their actual eyes. DD had one on the whites of her eye.

Oh no ear infection as well? I hope she feels much better very soon.

MrsHappy · 18/03/2010 16:37

Thanks. She's actually not too bad, it's just really grim! And she's turning out to be surprisingly vain for a 3 year old.

Awww, it ain't pretty is it? I cried on christmas night when I saw how dd and ds2 were covered. Ds1 who brought it home from nursery with him first had it bad with about 200 odd spots well I thought it was bad until the other two who had over 600 each! Apparently siblings who catch it off other siblings tend to get worse cases something to do with more exposure to the virus or something.

MrsHappy · 18/03/2010 16:52

We'll look forward to that then. I hope that DD2 will still have some passive immunity, but she's almost 5mo so I kind of doubt it.

Oh no if she does get it fingers crossed it's a mild dose. Hope your dd gets better very soon. x

Hi, just browsing re chicken pox. Both my boys (22 month & 7 month) have had CP the past few weeks - I just wanted to share what we used on their spots. We were recommended POXCLIN which you can buy from Boots. It's a light mousse so it spreads VERY easily and absorbs VERY quickly - great for wriggly babies & toddlers trying to make a run for it! As it absorbs so quickly, there's no mess & I have to say the best part is, no scratching whatsoever. the spots are healing up nicely now & I know it's thanks to Poxclin. So glad we were recommended this as I reckon the old Calamine lotion would have been time consuming & a messy job trying to get every spot!
