Contraception that gives no periods? Bad PMT

Adair · 18/03/2010 13:45

I have really, really bad PMT. Have been diagmosed with anxiety disorder in the past, a wondering if it's all related to periods. Especially as I was MUCH better when preg and bfing.

So is there any contraception I can take that will stop the periods completely? I may want another child in a few years but not right now and can probably wait. Have tried googling and no joy.

Copper coil??

Am sitting here a wreck. I can't go on like it. REally, am completely psychotic. am just about holding it together for the kids.

thanks

hi there, i found that the injection (depo provera i think it's called) made my periods stop. a sort of unwelcome side effect was that it also made me lose lots of weight as i felt nauseous most of the time. Afetr I came off that (i got a bit too skinny) I was on the pill and would take it continuously (i.e. not having the 7 day break) and not have periods. I did this purely because I hate periods and have painful ones. it did me no harm and indeed, I got pregnant the moment I came off it (by accident). I'm very lucky I know but it's perhaps worth a try. On the pill, I'd take up to 6 packs in a row then have a period. I've also tried the copper coil and absolutely hated it. made my periods extremely heavy and painful. and it's so painful having it fitted too. the other coil is supposed to make your periods lighter so that could be worth a try. my baby is now 6 months old and we're just 'being careful' until we're ready to start trying for the next baby. good luck!

I'm on the mini pill (femulen), and I don't have periods. When I come off it, they revert back to normal after a couple of months.

it may also be worth looking at alternative remedies for balancing moods/hormones. agnus castus is a good hormone balancing one. accupuncture may help too (though you may not have time/money with children to take an hour out for a session) you could also look at Bach flower remedies (e.g. rescue rememdy). I relied on these years ago when going through a traumatic break up. Your symptoms sound severe so please don't think I'm being all hippy herbal. is it worth discussing with a sympathetic GP what your options are re contraception or even anti-depressants? don't despair, it will get better x

Don't forget that what may stop periods for some, won't for others.
Two of my friends had the Mirena which suited them really well and stopped their periods completely. With me, it gave me terrible mood swings and PMT and I bled for 9 months continuously in the beginning then had a heavy bleed every month and sometimes two a month. So think carefully.

Mirena coil, plastic coil with a little pod of slow release hormone, very low levels as they are near where they need to be. I have had two periods in approx eight years, one after DS2 so they could time when to put the new one in, had it removed and was pregnant with DS3 before I even had a period!(Although my GP was when I turned up at her ante-natal clinic six weeks pregnant six weeks to the day I had it removed, she always says she feels a bit responsible for his birth!) Had one period after DS3 and then had another one put in. Apparently I can keep going with a new one every five years until after the menopause!

I've read on here about some people who don't get on with them but mine has been a dream, painless going in and out, and obviously didn't compromise my fertility in anyway. I've had the depro injections in the past and each time it's taken me a year to become pregnant. If you don't like it it's very easy for a GP to remove, and won't leave any lasting effects.

Adair · 18/03/2010 14:13

Yes, I think i probably need to go back to GP. I have anxiety tablets which I am remembering to take today

Agnus Castus. Will find and try, thanks.

Was on injection before and think it was ok... might give it a go as if it doesn't suit, it's only 3 months (or so) to wait til it's gone...

Although as solo says you can have some bleeding initially as your body settles in, with my first one I bled for a few weeks and then had smaller periods until it stopped completely after six months. Shame it didn't work for you solo.

solo · 18/03/2010 14:19

I know! I went up 2 dress sizes, had terrible side effects too. And GP's don't like to remove them either at your request. There are loads of threads on here about the Mirena, would be good to read them before going in for it IMO.

Adair · 18/03/2010 14:23

Yes, I have read lots about the Mirena... Was thinking maybe the copper coil ~(but am v squeamish)

Oh gosh, it's a minefield!

Depo injection is good so far for me (5 weeks in), but some other people have had horrid side effects.

Remember with alternative medicines:
herbal one have stuff in them, so they can have good effects but can also interact with any other medications you're taking;
homeopathy doesn't have anything in so won't do anything bad but also doesn't have any physical reason why it should do anything good.

lostinwales · 18/03/2010 14:31

Ooh, I'm glad I didn't know about MN when I was getting my mirena first time, those threads don't make it appealing at all and it's my best thing! My GP's have always been brilliant about monitoring it/taking it out etc, I was actually offered to have it removed there and then once before I'd even checked with DH if he wanted more DC's. I went back a few weeks later and they were happy to do it then. I suppose the reluctance to remove them could be how relatively expensive they are if they are only in a short while and your body may come to work well with it over time.

I'm always amazed how as a species how different we all are, I'm a radiographer when I can work and love how completely different we all are even though we've all got the same bits!

Malificence · 18/03/2010 15:02

Copper coil makes periods heavier and last longer, I had vile PMT for almost 10 years while I had copper coils , interestingly my PMT stopped as my coil reached the end of its lifespan but I started taking ginseng at that time too - there is a lot of evidence about copper toxicity, I wouldn't advise one if you suffer from bad PMT.
