anyone had surgery on their jaw?

hi all

im terrified and just need to know if anyone has had any surgery on their jaw or mouth.

ive had an infection in my gum that wont go away - ive had my wisdom teeth out 10 years ago with no problems and had it done at the dentist.

today the dentist took an xray and it showed something in my gum - looks like an extra piece of root or bone in my gum but its very deep.

dentist says its very unusual for anything like this to cause problems 10 years after having teeth out but, but it is causing problems and he says the operation to remove it would be done in hospital, under general anasthetic, they would have to peel the gum back to expose the jaw bone. it sounds horrible and i dont want to have it done - it would cause a massive disruption to my life and im due to start a new job. (hopefully if i can pass the fitness!)

im keeping everything crossed that the antibiotics work (this is the 2nd lot).

has anyone had anything similar done? is it an in/out job? how long did you need off work? i arnt normally a wuss, but this scares me for all kinds of reasons, not least because i dont want it to interfere with the job etc.

ta in advance

Can't help you with advice, sorry. Sounds nasty. Thought I'd give this a nudge to get it into active convos so it's seen.

Hope it gets sorted.

no one?

even more reason not to get it done then!

I've not had that particular op done, but I had my wisdom teeth out in hospital- too impacted for the dentist. also when i was 12 I had a broken jaw -this entailed 3 ops to sort.
All of them were without hitchand relatively pain free.
Surely you would only be a day case ,so disruption would be minimal.

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/03/2010 20:04

yep i think a day case is what it would be but i still cant go back to work the next day can i?

did you have to take time off flossie?

I had wisdom teeth out under general, it was a day case. From memory I think I had about 3 days off work. My mouth was really swollen but I have never had any problems since. It was definitely worth my while as the teeth were causing me pain.

i have always been absolutely terrified of having root canal work and this operation sounds like the mother of all root canal work....

thats my im going to puke emoticon...

I had an op under GA as a day case for 3 wisdom teeth out plus a tooth in the roof of my mouth(!) and one in my jaw bone.

It was recommended that I take 10 days off work but I only needed 5. The pain was bad but manageable with Paramol (paracetamol and dihydracodiene - over the counter). The worst thing was the swelling to the side of my face that took 2 weeks to fully subside. Talking was a little off for a day or two.

On the whole it was nowhere near as bad as I was warned it could be.

I am sure you'll do fine and good luck.

I had major jaw surgery when I was 17 and it came under max-fax (maxillofacial surgery). It certainly wasn't an in or out procedure.

Will the procedure be done by an oral surgeon (dentistry) or max-fax? Max-fax is rarely a day case AFAIK and can be quite major, oral surgery can be a different kettle of fish.

i suppose ill have to ask all these questions if the infection doesnt go and i have to go and be assessed at hospital.

id have to use my annual leave - the police need you to have clean sickness record before theyll give you a start date - anything like this would delay me start date which im not prepared to do.

starting metronidazole tomorrow so fingers toes legs and anything else that will cross crossed that it zaps it.

Metronidazole will blast anything nasty, that's for sure.

Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I was off for a week with my wisdom teeth -but only because I couldn't speak very well and my job really needed me to be able to communicate.
When I broke my jaw I was able to return to school 2 days after I came out of hospital -9 days in total.

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/03/2010 18:58

well i nipped in to see the GP who has given me augmentin to take with the metronidazole - am awaiting the side effects as we speak! i am now on enough to knock out a small elephant so i am really hoping this works.

if it doesnt im going to have to go and have the surgery done and use my annual leave instead of sick leave. im trying not to think about the procedure itself. apparently they can sedate you so you are semi concious or you be knocked out.

ill cross that bridge when i get to it!

thanks everyone.
