heavy bleeding after IUD fitting

I need some advice, I was told that I could experience 'some bleeding' after having the coil fitted on Monday evening - its now Wednesday night and I am changing towels every couple of hours still and taking painkillers to ease the cramps - I was told to contact the doctor if I had 'prolonged bleeding' what is 'prolonged'?? I was stupid enough not to ask and have no idea if this is in the relms of 'normal' the pain is bearible but dh has pointed out after 3 children do I have a warped idea of what I should be putting up with?

I was really naive about having this fitted I wasn't expecting it to be this painful so sorry if this is a silly question!

I'd say 4 - 5 days counts as "prolonged".

I had my coil removed last Tuesday ( day 3 of cycle) , hardly bled for two days but then bled heavily and painfully for 3 days and am only back to normal today really.

Is it fresh blood or dark clots?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 17/03/2010 21:47

I'd say this is prolonged. I have read research articles into bleeding and IUD's, I think that you should pop to A&E so that you can be checked over. IUD's are an absolute pain and it's possible to tear the lining of the uterus when putting one in so I really do think you need to get this looked at. Hope you are OK.

thanks malificence - its mostly fresh blood but then some clots (like smallest ones I had fews days after childbirth) does that make a difference?

Are you feeling dizzy/shakey/sweaty? Have you checked your pulse?

verybusyspider · 17/03/2010 22:05

not feeling any of those, just crampy, achey, heavy uterus (if that makes sense) occasionally sharpe pain on left hand side, did pulse, somewhere between 60-70 I think, not racing

can't get through to anyone at NHS direct - what a complete waste of money it is, I know they'll ring me back too and ask if I'm breathing... grrr

pulse is good, means you are not relaxed. Keep trying NHS direct.

verybusyspider · 18/03/2010 20:45

just in case anyone has same issue, nhs direct said it wasn't urgent urgent but sounded like I had an infection, turns out my GP was closed today for training so ended up back to nhs direct, then out of hours doctors, luckerly my brother was kind enough to come over after long paramedic shift to sit with boys for afternoon, now taking 3 different antibiotics which are making me feel sick and have to see GP tomorrow... if they are open

dh back later and will take day off work tomorrow, seriously might just ask to have it out...

I'm really pleased you got it sorted. I hope you feel better soon. Have a think about things, there was a reason why you had it put in in the first place so maybe give it a little time and see if you feel any different when you are better??

verybusyspider · 18/03/2010 22:42

I've resolved to see doctors tomorrow for another opinion and out of hours doctor said it really was best option but if I was still bleeding on Monday then I should have it taken out so I'll be doing that I think unless they feel strongly it should go before then.

I think on paper it is by far the best option for contraception for us I just really wasn't prepared for how painful it could be, I've had a hard week looking after the boys (3, 2 and 9 months)and its all self inflicted

I really do hope you feel better soon. I did have nasty visions of you bleeding out onto the floor because the coil had ruptured your uterus so I feel loads better now that I know you are OK

There's loads of different contraceptives. The implant's supposto be pretty reliable, both this and the jab stop periods though. Best method I can think of is no sex!!
