how sore, and for how long, after you have a tooth out

Would be grateful of anyone's advice or experience on this - had a tooth out on Tuesday. It took about 50 minutes and seemed like quite struggle for the dentist - it was a big one near the back. I am still very sore, but it seems to me that this is probably to be expected - don't want to go back to the dentist if there isn't actually a problem. Paracetamol gives me some relief, but I'm 29 weeks pregnant, so don't want to be shovelling them down for too long.

If there's a funny taste in your mouth or no clot in the hole then you need to go back to the dentist. There's a higher risk of infection if it's one of the back teeth that are removed and it's hard to take out so it's best to get it checked. Mine really hurt for ages as I had an infection. I hope you feel better soon.

keep rinsing with salt water, especially after you have eaten as it helps keep infection away quite well.

i had a back one out two weeks ago, still eating soft food as anything else hurts when i forget to chew on the other side only.

how much does it hurt? it could be a dry socket which is incredibly painful, and barely touched by paracetamol/ibuprofen. you would need to get it packed with some antibiotic stuff if that is the case.

if the paracetamol is helping then it might just be normal!

Thank you all.

I did have a funny taste for the first 24 hours, which worried me - but I started rinsing and also gently brushing the hole, and it went - which I took to be a good sign.

I guess soreness is relative to different people, but it's constant and making me feel irritable - however the paracetamol makes it more comfortable although it doesn't go right away.

The dentist said clots tend to break down after around three days. I wasn't alert enough to ask too many sensible questions - such as how can you tell when there's a problem...?

hmmm you're supposed to leave the hole alone for a while iirc, because otherwise you can remove the clot, which then leads to the dry socket

I think i'd ring the dentist tomorrow if I were you and see what they think

I'd go and see the dentist tomorrow if you can.

I got a dry socket when I had a tooth out last year and the pain level sounds similar. If it is, then you need to get it seen to.

Once I had the dressing in the pain went away very quickly.

So I may have destroyed the clot... yup will call dentist tomorrow and get his advice. Thanks again!
