Bicuspid aortic valve

Jux · 13/03/2010 12:29

As a result of the sudden death of my brother of aortic valve disease, I have had my heart checked out. It turns out I have a bicuspid aortic valve with slight stenosis and a little calcification(?).

I am now due to have something shoved down my throat so they can have a closer look.

I am still assuming I will live for at least another 20 years and will not drop dead suddenly, like my brother did.

Do I need to do anything? I was not thinking too straight when I saw the consultant y'day and didn't ask even obvious questions, like getting dd checked out.

Is there a greater risk to me because I have ms too?

Thank you.

Sorry to hear about your brother.
I think you're right in your assumption that you'll be around for quite a while longer. If you have to have it, then a slight stenosis and mild calcification is what you where you want to keep it
Now that you have a diagnosis, you should be followed up by the Cardiologist on a yearly basis to assess the degree of calcification/stenosis, and how well the heart is functioning.
AFAIK there is no increase in risk if you have MS.
It's the usual advice re: losing weight if you are overweight, eating healthily and discuss any exercise plan with your GP/Cardiologist before starting. You don't say how old your daughter is, but I would have thought it would be a good idea to get her screened as well as there is a family history of a bicuspid valve.

Excellent, stanausauruswrecks (great name!). Thanks for that.

DD is 10 and while I don't think there's any great urgency I will get on to it; bound to have a chat with GP next week anyway, and will be seeing cardiologist for thing-down-throat in the next 6 weeks, so plenty of opportunity (but will remind dh to ask too - one of us will have the brains to do it!).
