Pelvic floor exercies

Is there any point starting to do pelvic floor exercises before getting pregnant for the first time? [I'm currently thinking about having children and am trying to find practical and useful things I can do to prepare for it whilst thinking about it!]

If doing the exercises is useful, is there any point buying any of the commercially available products - like Aquaflex (www.pharmacy2u.co.uk/aquaflex-pelvic-floor-exercise-system-p1157.html) or the Be-content pelvic floor toning system (www.pharmacy2u.co.uk/becontent-pelvic-floor-toning-system-p1295.html) or one of the biofeedback devices like - (www.stressnomore.co.uk/Kegel8-Tight--Tone/productinfo/S9470/)? I can't really tell if they're likely to be useful or just a waste of money.

You should do Pelvic Floor exercises as a matter of course. Doing before pregnancy will be beneficial and help recovery after birth. I believe some of the exercisers are helpful and have helped women who suffer from a weak bladder, but wouldn't use during pregnancy, just do regular Pelvic Floor exercises.

Hi,

I definitely agree that pelvic floor exercises are for life!

I had a sort of Mummy MOT after the birth of my little one by a London clinic, and found that my pelvic floor was quite weak. I needed quite a bit of help to get it strong again. I think if I had been doing pelvic floor exercises during my pregnancy it would have been in much better condition. Probably I also wouldn't have had a mild panic in the last couple of weeks of my pregnancy of some leaking when I sneezed or laughed!

I was given a specific number of squeeze and holds and quick squeezes as well as squeezing and holding when I sneeze or cough, and would recommend that all women do these!
