Started with sore throat Thursday evening , took myself to bed Friday and Saturday.
Symptoms worsened with vomiting , unable to swallow my own saliva and hallucinating.
Went to the walk in centre Sunday am and got transferred straight to hospital.
Spent 4 nights on drip , had it aspirated twice and am now home with ab's and lots of pain killers!
Just wondering what peoples experiences were after this.
I have never suffered with any tonsilitis before.

Thanks

Isn't it a cyst in your throat? Can be caused by being run down, I think. I had a terrible sore throat and they suspected that, but v strong anti-b's got rid of it before it got to the needing to be hospitalised stage.

You need to look after yourself now, take it easy and lots of healthy food and early nights! It is dreadfully painful.

take your meds as instructed and if you feel it's worsening or can't swallow own saliva, get back to hospital.

it should clear up but don't take any chances as, as you now know, it can get quite nasty if left. surgery is an option if it doesn't improve, but i'm sure it will. take it easy...

Quinsy is the ordinary name for a peri-tonsillar abcess - an abcess around your tonsils. It is not nice, as I know myself - I had a sore throat that got worse and worse until I couldn't even swallow my own saliva, at which point dh rang the gp. I was offered an appointment a week later, and when dh said this wasn't soon enough, he was grudgingly offered one 4 days later.

He had to be really insistent before I was offered an appointment that day - at which the doctor said if the abcess had been left any longer, I would have needed to go to hospital and have it incised and drained surgically. But she put me on antibiotics, and it did clear up quite quickly, and has never recurred - so I hope it's the same for you, Lilyloo - and I hope you feel better soon!

My ex had them and was hospitalised too. They worry it'll block your windpipe from memory. Was very nasty. Never recurred though, so hopefully you're through the worst. Indulge yourself - sofa, good DVD, sleep. Hope you're better soon.

My mum had one of them, she had to go to hospital and have it lanced. They said they had never seen one so big, and if it had of burst it could of been fatal due to the amount of poison.

She was in hospital for 3 days on IV antibiotics.

I had quinsy on and off for about nine months when I was a teenager, so I guess I'm a warning that it can come back. I was young though so maybe in hindsight I wasn't so good at taking my antibiotics. I did need stronger and stronger ones though, and I was on a waiting list to have my tonsils taken out, but that's never happened and that was 13 years ago. I was told it was an abcess too.

One thing that worked for me was lemonade, not diet, you want the sugary stuff, as it gives some energy and doesn't upset your stomach (quinsy used to make me vomit a lot) so you could give that a try if you are struggling to eat or drink anything. Oh and add lots of crushed ice.

Hope you get better soon, it does make you feel so rotten.

Thanks all , good idea on the lemonade as feel so exhausted with not eating.
Fingers crossed it doesn't return! Hopefully dp off work this weekend so can get a bit of a rest from the dc's!!

I had quinsy a couple of years ago and it was pretty brutal. Started as a sore throat which I got straight after a wild heavy night. Run myself down clearly. Had previously had tonsillitis a week early and took antibiotics till symptoms wore off (always advised not to do this) and so I had some left over. Soon as I woke I had one and hoped by the afternoon it would clear up. Went to my mums where I dozed and generally felt extremely unwell, sweats, aching, couldn't swallow, kept taking antibiotics but by morning I didn't feel any better and felt like my throat was obstructed. Water wouldn't go down properly and I had a thick blocked voice. Went to walk in centre where they took one look in throat and sent me to hospital as they said it was an abscess and it would need lancing. Off we went and upon arrival got sent to the ear nose and throat ward. There a doctor sprayed my throat with an anaesthetic which probably wasn't even needed as it was that much pain anyway I don't think any other pain could be felt, she lanced abscess with what looked like scissors and then I spat the crap into a paper bowl. Immediate relief. Went back to the ward where I ate something shortly after and felt optimistic the worst was over. Wrong. The next day I was due to leave at lunch but I woke feeling obstructed again and not very well. I expressed concerns to doctor who looked in my throat and insisted it had gone and I could go home, so off I went with my tablets I couldn't swallow. Got home and was absolute struggle get tablets down throat so broke them and sprinkled them in soup and yoghurt and took myself to bed. That night was hellish. Felt in and out of delerium with fever, thirsty but unable to swallow liquid, weak and like I was going to pass out. Eventually at six am my parents took me back to hospital where I was taken back to the ward. There I was given a suppository which wasn't really strong enough and I waited until 1-2pm for it to be lanced. This time the doctor didn't spray my throat or give me a bowl to spit into or water and when I expressed this as the previous two days procedure had been much different, I think she thought I was being demanding and wimpy, so she flew in with the scissors and the abscess this time must of been bigger as some landed on her which after her impatient attitude made me giggle! Again immediate relief and I genuinely did feel better. Didn't get a quinsy again but was on antibiotics permanently for two months because every few days without them I could feel a sore throat returning and it would get bad but the antibiotics this time would keep it at bay and doctors were happy to prescribe them as they didn't want it to develop into another abscess. Stayed on them for about two months then got my tonsils out. Read all sorts of horror stories about this and was dreading it, despite my tonsils being so damaged it took the surgeon longer to take them out, it was fine. Nothing compared to quinsy. Ate toast shortly after and recovered quickly and pain free. I've made quinsy sound scary but the sooner you see a doctor the better as lancing is immediate relief and you're that swollen and sore you can't feel it. :)

Just recovering after peritonsillar abscess occurring 2 times the past months. I am a 19 year old male currently attending college in the U.S. I never had any tonsil related problems until 2 months ago when I went out and had a pretty heavy night and thus when the sore throat began. I have not dealt with any kind of long-term exhaustion in my life. I cannot emphasize more how important it is to get rest. (Sleep ) when you have a sore throat. After sleepless nights in pain for about a week, 2 trips to the ER, I had it aspirated. (When the access isn't big enough they can't drain it, it has to be big and painful). I immediately and recovered the next few weeks but it came back. After the school year was over I needed to head back home which consisted a 12 hour job trip all day + driving 4 hours right after while pulling all nighter + 16 hour flight ahead of me. I was doing my routine check up as soon as I got back and decided to get my throat checked out as well as the soreness was back. They ordered a CT scan and found puss. I was immediately hospitalized and they had it drained by incision this time. It was much more painful and I stayed in the hospital for about a week. My best advice is if you feel a sharp pain while swallowing it is 80% pus forming so immediately seek medical help and get the proper antibiotics. Get rest and listen to the body. I hope nobody has to go through this.
