i had repeated gum infections when i had wisdom teeth. i had all my wisdom teeth out at the dentist - straight forward and easy once the infections had gone. this was a few years ago and not had trouble since, until now.

ive had jaw pain for about 2 weeks, saw gp who said it could be tension (which fits as feeling a bit stressed) it seemed to ease off then today woke up with the mother of all gum infections. half my face, jaw and neck are swollen and painful.

saw dentist, who has prescribed antibiotics and cordysyl (sp??) mouthwash.

what can cause this? ive no wisdom teeth left! nothing was left in and the extractions were clean and easy.
tia.

did your dentist not do an x-ray or send you for one to see where it was coming from? (I'm not a dentist)

sorry belle - so did i for all the good it did me! never slept much with the pain!

anyway - no he didnt - he went back into my notes and said all my teeth had come out cleanly so at this stage he didnt think xray etc was needed.

Do you have a review appointment made? It is important to find out where the infection is coming from so it can be treated properly. Antibiotics will only get rid of the infection temporarily.

Ex-dentist here.

Yes you need to have some x-rays as the antibiotics won't cure the problem. There may be a tiny root tip left over from where the wisdom teeth was or it could be another tooth causing it.
