Disturbed sleep anyone?

I'm looking for positive stories about people who have suffered from disturbed sleep (not insomnia)and solved the problem. I have no problems getting to sleep but will toss and turn all night, not usually waking up fully in between turns. If I do wake up I usually go back to sleep no problem. On the odd occasion that I don't I just lie there thinking about mundane things.

I am getting increasingly desperate to deal with this, it's wrecking my life. I have had this problem for 12 years and have had investigations for sleep disorders/full blood tests/CBT/hypnothereapy/counselling etc and basically the NHS has nothing else to offer me. Though emotional coping techniques are good I feel the problem is at base physical in some way. Anyone?

I have this sporadically and sometimes find utter exhaustion brought on by exercise helps. When my sleep has been at its worst I have been known to train for up to 20 hours intenstively a week. right now i will settle for a cure that takes less time. 2hrs sleep last night 3 the night previously. I am knackered. I hope you get some relief. i am greatful that my sleep issues are sporadic. I dont envy you.

Just thought have you had a meds discussion. ds has meletonin for his sleep issues (major and consistant) and although he takes a smaller dose then prescribed, it makes a huge different to him.

Exercise can actually make it worse, limited. It's weird, it's like I keep moving around in my sleep so I never really get into a deep sleep, just superficial sleep

sounds like ds. he is exactly like that. I requested the melatonin as a trial for 1 month to see if it helped. It has made a huge difference to him. He would be with major behavioural issues if he hadnt had the stuff. All thanks to the power of mn, i have a child who can mostly function fairly normally. Might be worth a try asking if you can try it.

Very interesting, I have heard of melatonin, did you get it on NHS?

Does your ds have a diagnosis of anything?

Yep we got on the NHS. It is a cheap drug just limited in its licensing. Had to have a pediatrician prescribe as individually licensed for kids. General liscence for adults so it might be worth asking if it would be possible to try. Its what i had to do. Ds has no diagnosis but is boarderline asd and has a lot of other issues plus comes from a family with ADHD so not really surprising. He has suffered terrible night terror and sleep walking in the past too. When the bugger actually slept...
He's off meds at mo and i am cross and grumpy from lack of sleep. so sorry if a bit short.
Hope you get sorted.

This may sound a bit strange but after may years I have found not eating dinner at night helps me sleep.

A full stomach just makes me stay awake all night. Go to bed empty but not hungry. Just have something very small and simple like piece of fruit and small sandwich at 6.00 pm then drink water or decaf tea only after that.

Avoid anything fatty or difficult to digest like meat or creamy puddings or alcohol.

Thanks limited, I am surprised none of my gps has mentioned this in over a decade! Why would that be?! (otoh they never stop trying to push sleeping tablets even though I keep telling them they make me feel bad).

ABetaDad thanks for your advice. I agree heavy meals/alcohol can make you toss and turn. Unfortunately with me I toss and turn even if I don't having heavy meals (I have given up caffeine and alcohol)

Because melatonin is not yet a traditional med and i think it has to go through a consultant as still fairly new. Wont lose anything by asking. But might not get any further. With ds i just would it be possible to consider melatonin. would this be an option? Doctor said it was a reasonable request and he would speak to pead. pead wrote prescription. didnt even see us. Best bit was the doctor has just writen to pead to ask about withdrawal procedure and pead has issued another 200 days worth plus said keep sending the requests. so i am happy for now.

GOod luck.

had bad sleep problems for 20 years. Find it difficult to get to sleep....dont stay asleep very long....toss and turn all night....never feel refreshed, but i can just fall asleep at the drop of a ha=t whilst watching the tv

I wake up in the middle of the night and i think about silly things, then im wide awake til dawn. Dont feel paricularly tired during the day,but night time is very frustrating.
