Cartilage Operation?!

Anyone had one?!

DH had an MRI scan last week and has been told his knee cartilage is f**d basically and will probably need an operation.... he is due to find out more at clinic tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any experience they could lend me!

Dh had one last year, and my dad had two, but years ago. Amazing difference- my dad was in hospital for over a week (this was the 70s) but dh's last year was using keyhole surgery. He was just in overnight and was walking pretty normally the next day. He had to take it easy for a week, but was back at work well before that. Not as bad as it sounds, honest!

If you find out more info, please post it as I might need one too!

Dh had one a couple of weeks ago. In and out of the hospital in an afternoon. Walking straight afterwards without crutches. Was able to begin with mild exercise the next day.

ooooh sounds promising. We are a tad concerned because he has been on crutches for 2 weeks now, and wondering how much longer he will have to be on them!

Some types of knee/cartilage conditions respond well to being injected with a form of Restylane - a totally safe form of filler used in a thinner formulation as a wrinkle filler. I am currently investigating this for my own mother who is a dancer and therefore cannot afford to be on crutches for any length of time. I have found a dr who does specialise in this and he is seeing her next week. The product is called Durolane.

I had one, on my left knee 'meniscus' back in 1996. Keyhole job. SO glad I had it done! That torn cartilage was mega painful.

I had it done in an outpatient theatre under local anaesthetic and walked out a few hours later w/no crutches. Was in physio the next day.

I chilled out at home a week and slowly went back up to speed.

It felt SO much better w/o all that torn and loose cartilage.

Btw the Durolane treatment isnt' suitable for everyone and each treatment (one injection) lasts about six months;
