Fibroids, what next?

Ive just been diagnosed as having 3 external fibroids. The pain has been driving me crazy for about 3 years. I dont know if they are big in fibroid terms 9cm by 9cm roughly. Has anybody been treated for them or should I just live off painkillers until I hit my menopause?

Bless you - I have big fibroids too; one 6" and one 4". I haven't had any treatment yet, mainly because all the treatments seem to have implications for fertility, and I'm not ready to chance it yet... mine only hurt (like hell) when they degenerate.

Sorry, not much help to you, but didn't want to read & run. Bloody things

dont they only affect fertility if they are in the uterus? mine are outside. The pain cant be discribed. I thought I was going mad. The treatment looks abit hardcore, I have to see the consultant in a couple of weeks, damn, I want the pain to go but I dont know if Im ready for an op.

Sorry, I mean the treatments can affect fertility - for me options would be:

a) surgery, following drugs to temporarily induce menopause-like state which shrinks the fibroids a bit to make removal easier
b) uterine artery embolisation (uae or ufe) where tiny particles are injected into the uterus' blood dupply and block the vessels supplying the fibroids - these vessels are larger than those supplying the uterus itself, so the fibroids should be starved of blood & die leaving the uterus healthy.

However, the surgery would involve major uterine scaring / pos hysterectomy if it all went pear shaped, added to which the drugs can cause permanent early menopause in some people, and the UAE is very new treatment for fibroids and not yet reccomended if you might want more children (I think it sounds promising technology tho, and is probably what I'd try if the issue was forced).

My fibroids are inside the wall or the uterus, tho, not outside. Do you have a consultant to advise you?

Sorry again, this prob isn't too helpful - everyone's different. I have spent a lot of time researching the options tho - am pretty sick of looking 3-6 mo pregnant.

Do you have pain all the time? Mine was just when degenerating - ended up in A&E.

the pain is exactly when I ovulate and goes on until my period starts then I have two weeks of freedom! its really getting me down.
