I'm 51 and haven't had a period for over a year. I didn't have any night sweats, hot flushes, mood swings or anxiety. I was maybe more irritable and forgetful, but that has settled down now. My hair is drier now, and there's a bit less of it. I'm not on HRT and not planning to be. I hope that doesn't sound smug, I'm aware that I've had it easy, but then again I used to love having my period and am quite sad that they've stopped.

How old are you, choosy? Can your doctor not help with your periods?

choosyfloosy · 07/03/2010 21:04

Thanks mable, that's great to hear

There's nothing to complain about with my periods, certainly nothing i would take to a doctor. A bit like my one experience of childbirth, which was as quick and straightforward as any woman could dream of. I still found it agonising and traumatic... likewise with periods, i have no pain to speak of, a few very minor symptoms, it's a bit heavier since having ds but then it's a lot shorter so that's a plus, but nonetheless i just loathe the whole process, it disgusts me. i sound like such a princess, but honestly i don't think i am in other areas of my life.

I found this book very helpful.

Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time. I've not come across anyone actually looking forward to their menopause before !

mattvarnish · 07/03/2010 21:26

Quite agree, Choosy, I had floods, it got scary and embarassing at times - when periods suddenly came a day or two early as I was chatting in a man's flat! Quick exit.

Menopause was a delight. The night sweats were a bit of a surprise but the hot flushes were rather funny. I'd be talking to someone in the office and they'd wonder why I was 'blushing' - what embarassing thing had they said!
For one year the periods moved completely out of synch - skip a month, then two in five weeks, and some were like liver.had to have supplies and diary with me at all times! Then it all came to an end and I could go anywhere without worrying about traces beginning.
One bit of warning - apparently you can become pregnant for a year afterwards - my doctor told me this. Could hardly believe it was true, so do ask about it when you get there too. It's absolute freedom.

Yes, definitely does get better. I had my last period at 40, no menopause 'symptoms' whatsoever. I took HRT to help prevent osteoporosis as I was so young and stopped it when I was 50. Still no symptoms. It's great to be free of periods. However, I was like you choosy, no problems with periods or birth (although painful, they were all textbook-type). Maybe it all goes hand in hand and we're lucky.

Hello choosyfloosy

My menopause passed completely without drama, periods just got more erratic (with some mid-cycle spotting), then intermittent for about a year, then nothing for a few months, then one more - then no more.

I didn't have any of the symptoms I read/hear about. No hot flushes, nothing. Haven't even noticed I put on weight more easily, or anything at all really. My mother was the same, possibly something genetic in it.

It IS nice to be done with the whole business, but I was surprised how much I minded, at first, suddenly not being a woman who could get pregnant. It was only a blip, and I didn't want any more DCs anyway, but I felt.. that something was finished forever (which it was of course.) I'm over that now.

I hope yours goes well.

These are really good stories

This is going to be a really silly question, but does your pmt completely disappear?

SrStanislaus · 07/03/2010 22:58

I had my last period when I had my first lot of chemotherapy . I was 48 and although I had a generally shite time for the next 9-12 months I don't think any of it was connected to menopause. In fact it wasn't for ages that it registered with me that maybe I was going /had gone through the menopause at all.
5 years later I listen to contemporaries tales of hot flushes/flooding etc. with bemusement and thank heaven for one lucky break. I don't recommend my way though

choosyfloosy · 07/03/2010 23:04

Whoof!

Thank you all.

I'm 50 now and have definitely been perimenopausal for the last couple of years. Periods have been unpredictable in terms of when they arrive, and I've had the odd hot flush here and there. (These are definitely worse if I've been eating too much carbohydrate).

My last period was in November and I'm still waiting to see what happens next!

I haven't had night sweats or any obvious moodiness/irritability (although I guess you need to ask DH to confirm that!).

It's quite a funny feeling thinking that this could be it. But I'll be very pleased not to have periods to worry about any more.
