Does hot weather cause nosebleeds??

Hi All,
i posted 2 weeks ago, about my 2year old ds who had the mother of all nosebleeds while eating his dinner.
Well, my dh has just gone upstairs to have a bath, and my poor ds has had another nosebleed and we didn't even know! He didn't cry or anything and he was fast asleep absolutely covered in blood. It's all over the carpet, his bedding and the walls. We've cleaned him up as much as we can without waking him and he obviously wasn't perturbed by it at all.
I feel so sad that he was going through it all alone upstairs and we were none the wiser, poor little mite.
My dh said that it might have been caused by the heat as his room is extremely warm... do any of you think this is feasible?
Thank you in advance x

Yes. High atmospheric pressure causes nosebleeds and so does being hot and sweaty IME. I think it's because the blood vessels swell and burst.

I used to get tens of nosebleeds a day when I was a child - had my nose cauterised twice (very simple painless procedure) and don't get them as often now.

Thank you so much Hunkermunker.. you've really put my mind at ease and am pleased you don't suffer as much now.

yes - unfortunately both dd and ds are getting them almost every day at the moment (in fact, dd's teacher told me someone had a massive one in the swimming pool last week! bet the teacher's were delighted!)

foxinsocks · 17/07/2005 20:55

teachers no apostrophe doh!!

emmatmg · 17/07/2005 20:58

I used to get them all the time as a child, but never get them now.

womba1 · 17/07/2005 20:59

Luckily, i've never suffered with them but it just makes me shudder the amount of blood coming from a tiny nose. I've just been up to check on him and his toybox is covered too... he's still tried to play while his nose was bleeding... i feel pathetically sad for him!!

That's OK! I used to get them a lot when I lay down to go to sleep too - change of pressure in my head perhaps? When I got older it would make me cry - I wanted to go to sleep and instead had to sit up for another hour leaning over the basin with my nose literally pouring blood like a tap running Quite the party trick when I was a teenager!

The last one I had (several years ago) was the worst one - even leaning forwards, the blood was still running down my throat, congealing and making me retch. Lasted an hour and a half and I very nearly went to hospital - but I'm a rarity and not many people get nosebleeds as badly as me, so please don't worry! I just wanted to give you an idea of how bad they can be and still be normal iyswim.

Blood does look a lot more than it is though so don't worry too much about the amount it looked in his room. He won't have known anything about it while he was asleep either.

If he gets another one and he's awake, make sure he leans forward (NEVER tip his head back as the blood will run down his throat and make him sick), pinch the bridge of the nose (not the nostrils as when you release, you just open up the blood vessels again) and if he'll tolerate it, a cold flannel on the back of the neck and/or ice on the bridge of the nose (wrapped up in a tea-towel or similar). And one thing I found worked well was blowing my nose gently - I know you're told not to do that, but often the blood will congeal into a big plug that will just bleed itself and never clot properly - if you get rid of that, the blood vessels can close off properly.

Blimey - maybe I should call myself HunkerNosebleedExpertMunker?!

yep- ds1 is gettng them all the time at the moment. I had a chat at school about it on Friday- I had my nose cauterised as a child, but am not keen to do his as he's sevrely autistic, just waiting for the warm weather to go away. The great thing about this school was that last Monday they sent him home with his bloody clothes washed and dried

alux · 17/07/2005 21:01

yes, it did for me when I was little.

hunkermunker · 17/07/2005 21:01

Wow, Jimjams! Sorry that DS1 is getting nosebleeds, but what a fantastic school!

womba1 · 17/07/2005 21:08

Thank you for all that info HNBEM! We're going to buy a fan for his room tomorrow and just keep him as cool as possible. I don't want him losing anymore of the red stuff... especially not on my cream carpets!!!

DD is getting nosebleeds every night at the moment. I called 111 and the advice is to keep her cool, possibly smear a little vaseline on the nose before bed to keep it moist. The heat is causing the blood vessels to dry and crack so keeping them moist might help.

I had them as a kid too and I grew out of them about age 15. It used to be worse if I'd done a lot of exercise in the heat. It's not painful, just annoying and unpleasant.

sexcauldron · 18/06/2017 21:49

I'm sure she did try that,12 years ago Grin
