Oh lordy. Could this be scabies?

DH has a rash. All over his upper arms and across his waist. For about 10 days now.

He's been to the doctor who thinks it's some kind of allergy. DH has been given antihistamines. They certainly relieve the itching but it's not going away.

MIL had scabies about three years ago and wondered if it could be that.

But wouldn't the doctor have spotted that? And when I've googled, it says you mostly get scabies on your hands. Or at least, that's whwere it starts. DH's hands are fine.

Help!

Children normally get scabies under their armpits and in between fingers, anywhere where it's warm and slightly damp.

Ring worm is a rash that looks like a ring. Can you describe what it looks like or put a picture on your profile? There is a rash that looks like scabies but isn't, it's not infectious and takes a while to go, it's slightly itchy aswell so it could be this??

Hmm, not sure based on pics. And some of those are really very grim.

I've jsut mentioned the lycler to him. Worth trying I htink, even if it isn't scabies. At least it will put his mind at rest.

My 89 year old dad is just getting over scabies - he caught it in hospital He has it mainly on his back. I think they did a kind of scrape of his skin to test.

Coldhands · 07/03/2010 08:04

I had scabies a few years ago and it didn't start in the usual places. It started on my wrists and legs. If you son has had it for 10 days without treatment, it probably isn't as it is very contagious and he would have passed it on by now.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 07/03/2010 08:46

Does not sound like scabies; also the GP would have recognised it.

It may be pityriasis rosea which is not readily diagnosed by GPs (is the rash patchy in appearance?). It can take a dermatologist to diagnose it. If it was this it is not contagious.

belgo · 07/03/2010 08:50

GPs do not always recognise scabies; the rash can vary from person to person depending on how their immune system reacts. It is incredibly itchy - the type of itching that does not go away when you scratch. It does not appear on the face, but on the hands is very common.

belgo · 07/03/2010 08:51

Coldhands - scabies can take a couple of months to develop fully after you catch it.

Eeeew · 07/03/2010 20:27

Its DH not DS.
It's all over his upper arms and on his love handles.
It doesn't look like pityrius rosea having googled that.
DH is now convinced from the pictures that it is scabies.
Can't see any burrow marks.

And if it is friggin scabies how the fuck has he caught it?

Would disagree that a GP would recognise it tbh. I developed a rash which was diagnosed as scabies in 2003 after 6 weeks it was getting worse with no relief...turned out I am allergic to the alcohol gel they have in hospitals and I was having to use it numerous times a day as my dad was in hospital.

Eeeew · 08/03/2010 19:06

DH saw nurse today at work.
She says it's not scabies.

Phew.

DH is suspecting either allergy to new shampoo or the washing powder people have put in a new ingredient. It's possible I guess.

Either way, I think he needs to go back to the GP as the antihistamines he's been given are hardly touching the sides and he's very uncomfortable with the itching.

He did do the lyclear just in case anyway.
