Tell me about the contraceptive implant, dont think I can have my beloved mirena again )-:

I am supposed to be having another mirena in a fortnight, but after my traumatic birth and even more traumatic post natal period I have turned into a total baby.
I dont have any faith in my own body, and although I trust my GP to the end of the earth I cannot allow anyone else to be fiddling about with me in case something happens.
She has suggested I see someone in gynae and get it done at the hospital but that would involve the same things and Im just not sure I can cope.

So how is the implant?
Does it stop your periods like the mirena?
Any good side effects like weight loss (heres hoping) ?
How long does it stay in for?

Anything good or bad would be great to hear thanks

my daughter had an implant as the pill didn't regulate her it only stopped them for 18 months rather than the 3-5 years the contraception is still working but she is now back on the pill continuously as she was getting 2 weeks of bleeding again she never gained any weight or lost any with it.

I have the implant, had it done in December,

Plus - I had one slight bleed lasted a 3-4 days, and that has been it since, considering I was a very heavy bleeder I've been quite happy with it. It lasts for 2 years so I don't have to worry about it. Quick to put in (I went to the drop in centre, had to wait about 2 hours to be seen but then it only took about 15 minutes from walk in to walk out).

Down side - itched like a bitch for about 4 weeks around where it has been put in. Hurt a little to get it in. The doctor put bit of anaesthetic cream where she was going to make the incision so it didn't hurt when she cut but it was really uncomfortable as she had to displace tissue to push it in. It hurt a little for about a day or so but not bad. As I said, really really itched for a while after but all has settled down now and I'm really glad that I had it done.

Another (but minor) problem is the doctor told me it can take a while to get an appointment to get it removed. You can't always have it removed in a walk in clinic as it takes somebody specially trained to take it out and it can take up to 3 months to have it removed; therefore, it is best to make an appointment around 3 months before it is due to run out. You can however have replace it at the same time.
