Could thyroid problem have similar symptoms to low iron levels?

Was at the GP on Monday as been feeling very unwell lately. Tired, dizzy, pains in legs, can't keep warm.

Also having frequent periods so assumed low iron could be the cause.

Got haemoglobin result today - 13.8 - which is fine so that isn't it.

Also getting tested for thyroid problem but that result isn't back yet.

Just wondering if the symptoms sound like a thyroid problem.

Anyone any experience?

Thanks

Cd be a number of things. Have you asked for a full blood test which could pinpoint something? I thought I was iron deficient (vegetarian, always tired) and may have a thyroid problem. A full blood test showed I was - perimenopausal, vitamin D3 deficient, and should stop drinking 2 glasses of wine a night

I've been feeling dizzy and tired too and started taking Spa tone iron. It's liquid and natural so easily absorbed. I found I feel worse after my period so gave it a go and it's worked. I'm sure if I got my iron levels checked they'd be normal as my diet is excellent. Maybe some of us need more iron? I'm slightly overweight so maybe this makes me need more?

I hope you get sorted as it's no fun feeling this way. If your thyroid comes back normal what are they planning on doing? I've heard the thyroid test is pretty basic and there's a more thorough one, could you have this done privately? Maybe get your vitamin levels checked too?

wheels how old are you? I was wondering if I'm peri-menopausal?

Could you be suiledonne?

Curiousmama · 04/03/2010 11:42

Did you mean B3 wheels? I must say your GP has been very efficient makes a nice change

Some of those do sound like thyroid although tiredness goes with under active thyroid but you more likely to get less frequent periods with underactive thyroid

Curiousmama - I'm 46. Yes, was pleased with efficiency of GP (one of them in our practice is excellent). It was Vitamin D3 (the vitamin you get from sunlight and oily fish, deficiencies of which cause brittle bones.) The only reason I mention it was because I was just going to start popping iron tablets and skip the GP, and was glad I didn't.

glad you had a good result. I'm 42 so it could be the same with me? I've just been looking at symptoms and dizziness is one of them, as is weight gain. I eat healthily and am active but have gained weight.

curiousmama - I think you are way too young for the menopause.
Just Googled vitamin D3 deficiency, and this woman seems to think it causes everything (though how you are supposed to spend 20 minutes in the nude in the sun, as she suggests, is mindboggling, particularly when it's 5C today)

Interesting article. You can take a supplement of it though, think I'll look into that. I've heard it can even cause MS (not getting enough sun) not sure of truth in that though?
