Recurrent thrush

Leo35 · 03/03/2010 20:42

Has anyone any experience of recurrent and not quite clearing thrush? I took my second flucanozole tablet yesterday (after talking to Nurse at GP Practice) and in all honesty symptoms seem worse this evening than this morning, when I thought that I might be getting shot of this.

Also my wee tested negative for a UTI but it is definitely Not Right - I'm pretty sure that this is a thrush related thing. Anyone else suffered with this?

In short I guess that I am seeking some reassurance and advice. How long do I give the tablet to work before going back to the GPs? My AF is due next week, and that has been the tigger for the thrush for the last two months.

Have started new yeast and sugar free diet, wear cotton knickers, can't bear to wear trousers at the moment, do not use bubble bath, shower etc etc.

Also does anyone know why you are meant to avoid wheat out of all the cereals and carbohydrates? Perplexed on that one!

HAve not had a glass of wine for weeks. Wish I could!!

no need to avoid wheat but avoid refined wheat- white flour and sweet stuff.

the tablet can take up to a week to work- it says you can repeat after a week.

If no better see your gp for swab? have you tried a "thrush" pessary as well?

wilkos · 03/03/2010 20:48

yo are doing all the right things to clear it, I had to do the same a few years back after three lots of antibiotics had totally messed up my health - it took two weeks but I felt tons better and it finally cleared up.

give the tablet a couple of days and if it hasnt even started clearing go back to GP

feel for you, thrush is misery

wilkos · 03/03/2010 20:53

oh yes, forgot something - pre AF dip a tampon in good quality organic plain bio yog straight from fridge and stuck it up your fanjo overnight. apply same yog liberally to bits.

and wear old pants, obv.

worked better for me than any pessary!

pollywollydoodle · 03/03/2010 21:30

did they check your wee for glucose as well? recurrent thrush sometimes a sign of underlying diabetes

rabbitstew · 03/03/2010 21:50

The tablets never work for me. The pessary and cream mostly works first time.

Leo35 · 03/03/2010 21:56

I was just sitting down to my daily portion of bio yog this evening and read your alternative use wilkos!

Thanks for all the advice and the explanation on the wheat situation! Will hang on in there for a couple of days and see how it goes. Baked a chocolate first birthday cake for DS2 the other day - it's been torture staying away from the remains!

Leo35 do you watch Embaressing Bodies?
A lady was on there a couple of weeks ago with what she thought was re acuring thrush and said her outer labia was very sore. I have had similur thinking it was re acuring thrush and it turned out to be a skin infection I had previously taken live yogs and pessaries nearly every month woth no joy. The nurse prescribed me Canestan cream but a different strength and it cleared up in a couple of weeks.
What I am trying to say is it might be worth getting checked out again

Leo35 · 04/03/2010 20:39

Hi, I had a word with the nurse while I was at an appnt for DS2. She has booked me to see the doc tomorrow am. I am so glad that she took me seriously, as I feel like I am wasting their time as it's not in the same league as my leg dropping off or similar.

Thanks for the advice and reassurance it is much appreciated.

You should try to cut back on 'fungal' type food as well, cheese, mushrooms etc.

tigger15 · 07/03/2010 13:57

I got recommended acidophillus by the nurse. It still comes back though.

Hi,

I wanted to update this thread in case others are going through a similar situation to me in that they think that have a persistent thrush problem. In my case it's not thrush at all it's a Group B strep infection. Did a swab test a week or so ago, and came back with that information. Now on antibiotics, and going for a repeat swab in a couple of week's time, so I am really hoping that it will be gone as he "thrush" has been a problem for weeks and I have taken a lot of fluconazole!

I wish that I had insisted that the GP or nurse had done a swab earlier, as we have all had the wrong diagnosis in mind. The symptoms were similar in my case. Also there is very little info online on Group B STrep infection when you are not pregnant.

Hope this helps others who are going through the situation.

Hope you dont mind me asking - but what were your symptoms because im all confused. i have been suffering with abdo pain but no usual symtpoms of thrush apart form feelinf bladder pressure type thing - anyhows a swab came back saying thrush and i did pessary and cream thing and all has been well for about 10 days and now 2 days after my AF has been and gone i have abdo pain again - could this really be thrush alone? Also last time a uti showed up as well or is thrush a uti - i had a vaginal ultrasound at one point that revealed bugger all according to doctor afterwards despite sonographer woman saying residual fluid indicative of possible ruptured cyst.

Leo35 · 29/03/2010 20:54

Hi nzll,

I haven't had abdominal pain, just felt very sore and it's all looked an angry red. I think that I should have realised that I wasn't getting the classic discharge that is associated with thrush, although I did mention that to the nurse once during a call to the surgery and she said sometimes you don't with thrush. I don't know if you can have Group B strep and thrush together - I wonder if I have had both together, or one after the other. Something to ask GP at repeat swab time.

I don't know if thrush is a UTI, I had a urine test way back in all of this farrago that tested neg for bacteria, but I had raised leucocytes sp?).

May be worth calling your GP again if you are still getting pain and bladder pressure. Would the hormones of your monthly cycle aggravate ruptured cyst? (wondering 'aloud' as it were). The creams and tablets for treating thrush cite AF as a possible trigger and I supposed that it was the hormonal change and the menstrual flow that allowed the thrush organism to thrive.

Hope that you can get the pain sorted, it can't be comfortable for you. .

ooo thanks for that - food for thought - i have loads of cranberry juice last ngiht and had some this am and also am in loose knicker mode to facilitate airflow lol. I always wear those close fitting sort jobs so need to cut them out! So far so good this am so i will wait and see, its a pita isnt it! Perhaps im just getting old!

I too wonder if i had something then thrush after or if together and is now coming back - great stuff!

nappyzoneloveslindor · 30/03/2010 09:38

that was ment to read "short" type jobs lol. Anyway glad your better

Leo35 · 30/03/2010 12:16

lol at Loose Knicker Mode. Ditto for me, along with wearing skirts for weeks. Back into jeans and trousers but definitely nothing too figure hugging (a real possiblity as trying to loose weight at present).

Good luck with the cranberry juice!

I found the panty liners I was using kept making me itchy. Used to get thrush all the time and so did dd but she hasnt had it in ages. When I do get it now it isnt that bad. Basically the dr told me it was something dd would grow out of and something I just had to live with! I stopped worrying about it and havent had any problems since - psychological or something maybe, worrying about it made it worse, or made it seem worse. But ditching the pantyliners def did me some good!

bacon · 31/03/2010 12:39

Make sure your partner uses the thrush cream on his willy as not doing this gives you it back, I suffered for years on and off, the diet thing isnt proven and a bit of a waste of time if you have already a healthy diet.

I think you can get a gel that you can apply to get the area moist hence stop any chaffing - may be acigel???

nappyzoneloveslindor · 31/03/2010 13:35

I went back today and saw a new doc who was actually quite nice and said she thought my abdo pain wasnt thrush and that i just had thrush without symptoms anyway so no need to treat i , i am huty today again so she wants me to niggle on till Saturday and go back then to see how things are as my pee test was also perfect. Pissed off thats me!

Leo35 · 31/03/2010 21:16

I suspected that I might be getting thrush again, so went into action with the natural yoghurt. Seems to be feeling better - so fingers crossed. AF due next week, and has been something of a trigger for either (or both) of the infections, but thanks to an earlier plan of treating the thrush long term I have a stock of fluconazole tabs ready to go.

I have swapped over to Natra Care pads and panytliners, but don't use pantyliners everyday. No chlorine bleach etc. Going to stick with them for a while until I feel that I am not getting thrush or whatever each month. HAve been doing so much 'right' that I have been proper pissed off with all the visits to the docs etc. Why? And how does a Group B Strep infection happen???

Has the doc given you any view on the abdo pain nzll? Agree that the waits until you see them again always seem far too long. It's so frustrating when you know that something is wrong but you can't solve the riddle. Take care of yourself until then, and don't try and dwell on the question of how you feel "down below" (official doctor/nurse speak)!!! It always makes it feel worse!!!

nappyzoneloveslindor · 31/03/2010 21:23

Iknow what you mean if i think about something else i forget the pain for a bit. DH just offered me a muller corner as he heard yogurt can help - not sure what im supposed to do with the choco balls .

Just been reading up on Pelvic inflam disease btu i have no tenderness so i will remain a medical mystery and hope things improve by saturday! Good luck with your yogurt trick

I did wonder how long pain killers stay in system for as perhaps the pain never went was just masked as pk still stayed in my system? I dunno .

Great you're cutting out sugar and yeast. A healthy alternative to wheat is spelt (AKA the healing grain) or kamut.

For cheap yeast free breads (they do a great spelt one), go to: www.soyfoods.co.uk
Just remember to ask for it sliced as its better toasted.

Try to limit fruits and stick to white cheeses. Miserable, I know.

I had a battle with thrush and UTIs which was made worse with antibiotics. Managed to control it through diet. Hang in there - sounds like you're on the right track.
