Thrush under my arms

WigWamBam · 16/07/2005 16:20

I have got thrush in my armpits and it's driving me crackers. I've been using Canesten for 4 days and it's not touching it - it's just getting worse and worse. Does anyone know if there's anything else I can try? Would Diflucan work, or is that just for vaginal thrush?

Oh, ouch!

Well, thrush thrives in damp places, so you could try getting some athletes foot powder and using it everytime your armpits feel damp. It has an antifungal in it that may work on the thrush, which is caused by a fungus.

you have my genuine sympathy for this one!

fishfinger · 16/07/2005 16:29

are you sure its not a differnt sort f fungucuda infection?

I used to get it years ago, and the GP used to recommend Canesten, but it's just not helping. It's definitely thrush; I can tell by the yeasty smell).

My dh might have some athlete's foot powder somewhere, I'll dig that out and have a go before I scratch myself stupid!

Thanks

Please, does anyone know what else I can try?

You have my sympathies, I used to get thrush in similar spots while pregnant.

I found that cutting out all sugar from my diet helped.

I'd also maybe try applying paste of baking soda and water, or soaking in a bath with baking soda in it? On the plan that making it as alkaline as possible might kill it off?

As others have said, keeping the area cool and dry will help. Don't wear shirts with sleeves if possible. Don't wear synthetic sleeves, certainly. Maybe talc?

Aveeno bath stuff might help, too, dunno, but it's hard to get in this country.

spidermama · 16/07/2005 22:20

Canesten can make it worse. How about garlic and tea tree. I know it sounds loony, but I swear it cleared up my dreadful thrush overnight.

WigWamBam · 16/07/2005 22:21

I hadn't thought of baking soda, I might give that a try.

I wonder if cutting out yeast as well as sugar for a while would help?

OP posts:
spidermama · 16/07/2005 22:22

Definitely cut out yeast. Bread and wine.

WigWamBam · 16/07/2005 22:22

spidermama, I think the Canesten might be making it worse actually. I'll try and get some tea-tree tomorrow; don't think I have any in at the moment.

Thanks.

DD got this when she was a baby - she was a real dribbler, and was constantly damp under the arms - it used to get really bad. Obviously not implying the same thing for you but I found the best thing was to keep it dry using a medicated talc. I wanted the one that you used to use on the umbilical stump, but they don't do it anymore. The pharmacist recommended another one, but I can't remember the name or find the tin

WigWamBam · 16/07/2005 22:29

I promise you that it's not because I'm dribbling, serenity

I had this once and my dr said to use a haridryer to dry it and an aerosol deoderant not a roll on. She also gave me some cream that wasn;t any of those previously mentioned. I'll try to remember its name

jane313 · 16/07/2005 22:46

sorry am at work and can't seem to find it when googling. I post it tomorrow, its prescription though.

jane313 · 16/07/2005 22:48

just found it, daktacort

antifungals

WigWamBam · 17/07/2005 10:25

Thanks.

I used some tea-tree last night and it was really soothing - but the thrush looks worse again this morning and it's really sore again.

At least I have some more tricks to try ... thank you!

colditz · 21/07/2005 23:28

Did you get it sorted out?

joash · 21/07/2005 23:30

Not sure what to say, I got this in the same place years ago and if you wanna look on the bright side - it somehow killed off lots of hair folicles and I get very few hairs growing now . Hope you manage to get it sorted soon www.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2005 23:32

It's still driving me nuts! I've been using Canesten HC (recommended by the pharmacist) and tea-tree gel, I've also been using bicarb in the bath, but it's proving really hard to shift. I think it's a little bit better but not much - and it's bleeding in patches now as well. It smells horrible too - I stink like a jar of Marmite

OP posts:
sorrel · 21/07/2005 23:33

i would give the diflucan a go. I had it under my boobies once and the diflucan worked. also dr said i needed a cream with a bit of hydrocortisone in it as well as fugicide. need a script - sorry can't remember the name of it.
poor you www. sore and annoying. hope it goes away soon.

WigWamBam · 21/07/2005 23:35

The Canesten HC is an anti-fungal with hydro-cortisone in it, sorrel. I'm sorely tempted to try the Difflucan, I'm pretty sure it couldn't do any harm.

OP posts:
spidermama · 21/07/2005 23:41

Go for the diflucan, deffo. It's for systemic thrush. But go to the doc to get a proper dosage (a loading dose followed by a course).

Also, when I had horrendous nipple and milk duct thrush which I couldn't seem to shift, I finally went to the homeopath after 6 weeks of trying conventional methods, he gave me a remedy and it disappeared within 48 hours.

My hv then told me farmers use homeopathy on dairy cows with thrush (ahem!).

It's a leap of faith, but surely worth a go.

sorrel · 21/07/2005 23:45

maybe gp can give you something stronger than canesten HC- it is quite mild i think- especially if you have had this for a while and it has'nt worked.

WigWamBam · 22/07/2005 11:50

spidermama - do they really give difflucan as a course? I was just going to get the single dose OTC tablet.

I think I'll ring for an appointment with the GP, see what he recommends.

When you have had a bath or shower, gently dry the area and apply Lanacane. Its powder like talc and will gently cool and soothe the area. It works for me.
