Scoliosis

My DD (17) has been for an xray of her spine today. While she was in the room she heard two members of staff discussing her spine. We found out that she was being tested for scoliosis (curved spine) and they said that she does have a problem but not enough to have to have rods inserted to straighten it. They could not discuss it with us - we were not meant to have overheard - and now we have to wait three weeks to speak to our GP about the results. My DD has only been getting a stiff back ab her spine is not noticeably curved - we were not expecting this outcome. Does anyone else know of older children who have developed this? My DD has stopped growing and spent 6 years at gymnastics without any problems. We are SO worried about her.

I agree "Aquamarine* i had an osteopath who said he could have fixed it if I had seen him sooner - rubbish. I think keeping fit and healthy and slim can help though and adopting good posture. I was also a gymnast and a dancer in my teens and trained every day.
I am in my 50's and was diagnosed age 13 - lots of toing and froing about whether to have a brace/operation for a few years but I said no in the end as was finally offered it at 18 and about to go away to uni.Was discharged from hospital and having back monitored. Never had any problems in the past (and had 5 DC) just a bit of backache recently but I have put on weight which also makes it more noticeable (I have one side where my waist goes in and the other a fat side with one hip higher than the other so one leg seems slightly shorter).

Back in the late 70's they thought the curvature may have been caused by the heavy school bag and sports gear etc that I had to carry to school being too heavy for my small but growing frame.

Please don't worry - if you haven't noticed it- the curvature is most likely mild and will not affect her life in any way.

My curvature was 39 degrees and did not shift from this significantly during my teens
