Please could you talk to me if you have had your gallbladder out?

My mum is having hers out today, laparoscopically (unless they need to convert to open surgery, hope not) and she is really nervous and so am I.

She's 57, good general health etc. but worried all the same. Has anyone had this done, and been Ok? Sounds silly but could do with some reassurance, thanks x

Hi. I had mine removed by keyhole in July last year.

Operation itself was fine. I was kept in for 3 days after, but this was nothing to do with the gall bladder. (They noticed some tumours on my liver while they were doing the operation.)

Couldn't drive for about 2 weeks (until the incisions had closed). Was happily pottering around house within 4 or 5 days though. Felt much better within 2 weeks of operation and can happily eat just about anything i fancy now. The pain from the operation is not as bad as the pain from the gall bladder problems. It's such a relief to be rid of it.

Hope this helps.

No experience Flight, but just wanted to wish her (and you) well and hope all goes well today.

I had mine out just over a year ago.
Stayed in overnight (was going to go home but had a dizzy spell and was sick!) Was in a fair amount of pain for the first couple of days. Week later i was walking DC to school (mile each way) with only minor discomfort. Also took the kids sledging less that 2 weeks after op. Painful still but couldn't let the kids down!

Wounds healed quickly and only tiny scars left. Can eat normally now without any problems.

Hope all goes well for your Mum.

Wishing you mother well, FA. Had mine out two years ago-ish. Was very worried but the operation was fine and the pain afterwards pretty mild.

Tortoise that's brill, too - thankyou very much. Have been reading Wiki about all the possible side effects and complications and scaring myself!!

feel a bit better now. I will insist she takes it easy for a couple of weeks...she is the type to push herself.

Thankyou Bleen, glad it wasn't too painful.

She should be going in in about an hour. Fingers crossed!

both of my grandparents have had their gallbladders removed, and an aunt as well. They are all going very strong and the operation was an 'easy' one, relatively speaking. As tipsycat writes, the pain from the operation was a relief from the pain of the gallbladder.

Hope she makes a swift recovery and feels better.

Thankyou, i hope so too x

I had mine out 12 years ago by keyhole. It was fine. The gall bladder burst when they removed it so I had to stay in overnight with a drain in but it wasn't particularly sore. I stopped the painkillers after a couple of days and felt fine within a week or so. I haven't had any problems since. I'm sure your Mum will be fine and be glad when it's done.

Thanks Paddy, that's good to hear.

Well, after going slightly mad since missing a phone call at 2.30 when I was going out to school, and being unable to contact dad or his mobile which he left with her, I got a call about 10 minutes ago to say she is Ok, went in late, and it went to plan, ie they did it by laparoscope and didn't find anything sinister.

She spoke to me briefly but was very slow and sleepy and not feeling great - but she was alright, and said she should be out by 9pm. If she can walk that is, which I'm not sure she will.

Thankyou for helping me get through the day, it's been a tough one. x
