8 week old first jabs - fever and vommiting - is this normal?

I took DD for her first set of jabs yesterday and thought nothing of it as DS was fine with his, but last night she projectile vomited all over me and started running a fever. I gave her Calpol as directed which brought it down initially but then it came back and went higher. I gave her a second dose of calpol but can't give her anymore due to her age. Her temp went down again but she continued to throw up the little that she ate and has been pretty gloomy. Temp was okay first thing this morning but has started going up again. Is this normal?

Fever is normal after jabs but vomiting isn't particularly normal after the first set.

It may be unrelated. Is there a bug going round?

I would keep a very close eye on her. If it doesn't look like a bug to you or you have any concerns then don't hesitate to contact a doctor. In such a young baby it us probably worth contacting a doc anyway because of the risk of dehydration if temp/vomiting continues.

If you decide that you think it it might have been a vaccine reaction ( you don't gave to be certain just need to have a suspicion) then ask for it to be yellow carded. If that is refused then there is an online reporting system that you can fill in yourself. It says for medications but I would just use it for jabs as well.

Hope she's better soon.

Very unlikely to have caused the vomiting
Fever however very common
She is only 2 m old so I would have a vvvvvvvv low threshold for getting her checked out
Any concerns, see a doctor

Good, that sounds sensible

A yellow card is something doctors should fill in for any potential adverse reaction to a vaccination. Because of the close proximity in time in this case IMO a yellow card should be filled in. Just to rule it out - sometimes there are what are known as 'hot batches' of 'vaccinations' which can cause unexpected problems. Usually doctors are very reluctant to fill in yellow cards though and will tell you (without investigation) that it's not related.

I agree that it is highly likely that the vomiting is not related but a good system would want to check.

I can't link to the online site as i'm on the iPod but if you google adverse reaction, vaccination, yellow card uk you should get it.

At the moment though the most important thing is to get your dd checked out and make sure she isn't dehydrated etc from the vomiting. Hope she's better soon and if it is a bug hope you don't get it.

How did it go Stigaloid?

Stigaloid · 25/02/2010 13:01

no infection signs anywhere, although sluggish sounding tummy. her reflux went into overdrive as side effect of jabs. pulse, heart rate and chest all clear so just keep administering calpol and keep watch for 48 hours. she is sleeping lots but still has wet nappies so not dehydrated. poor lamb.
