Labour pains whilst having a mirena coil fitted- is this normal?

On Monday I had a Coil fitted. I had a c-section five months ago and had endimitrisis in December. my swabs and smear were clear. I am BF. I took two paracetmol prior to the procedure. I was told that there would be some pain. The doctor didn't seem very confident and I don't think he read my notes as he looked very disconcerted at my screaming during the procedure. The pain for those twenty minutes or so was worse than my 21 hours of labour! The pain is dulling down now. Are there any medical staff/GP's out there who would have provided better pain relief prior to fitting the coil?(based on my history). I called the surgary the next day to ask for pain advice and to complain I was fobbed off. They said that ' people experience varying degrees of pain'. I just wanted them to treat me as an individual. Any thoughts? Did having a c-section make a difference?

you poor thing, that sounds dreadful! surely the doctor should have read your notes beforehand?

i have no advice as am not medically trained, but didn't want to read and run.

btw, i had a mirena fitted by the practice nurse and it didn't hurt so much as feel very uncomfortable and very odd. it sounds like you had a very bad experience indeed..

I had a trainee doctor fit my copper coil, I was the first one he had actually fitted. It hurt so much.
I took painkillers for about a week, and a hotwater bottle helped a lot.

Thank you. I am no stanger to pain either. Prior to becoming a Mother I had a mirena fitted under general anastetic for severe period pains. Maybe the doctor I had was inexperienced. When I told him this, he asked why it was fitted under general! He obviously needs some training as it is obvious that a person who hasn't given birth will be in pain. I would like the practice to review the procedures involved. Thank you for your comment.

Mine felt like really bad period pains, made me double up. It does make the uterus contract - it's trying to expel the thing. Maybe this triggered labourish pains? It sounds quite extreme, poor you.

sandcastles · 25/02/2010 00:33

Your uterus contracts around the coil, so I was told. Mainly to expel is, as it sees it as a foreign object. I was cramping for a few days. My section was 7 months previous.

I had mine out tho, after 2 months...infection.

You have been warned that the hormone has been found in breast milk, haven't you?

iamanewmum31 · 25/02/2010 00:39

Yes. I believe it is still has the lowest trace of all the oral contraceptives. I have read up. Thanks.

Sorry I meant hormone based contraceptives! Lol

I didn't have any kind of anaesthetic and the pain wasn't severe enough to warrant even a local. I took a couple of ibuprofen or whatever. It ached a bit after but that's it.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 25/02/2010 01:02

ps had not had kids. That amount of pain is not normal

ant3nna · 25/02/2010 01:06

I had a copper coil fitted with no pain relief and I have never been pregnant never mind given birth. It did hurt a lot, I thought I was going to vomit when I got home but your doctor is right, people do experince different levels of pain before and after the procedure.

The pain during the fitting I thought comparable to extremely strong period pains and after were just like regular period pains after the initial nausea had gone. To be honest it isn't obvious that women who haven't given birth will suffer more pain as it isn't always the case.

sandcastles · 25/02/2010 07:15

iamanewmum31, that's good that you know, because it is one thing (of many) the drs don't tend to tell you about the mirena.

iamanewmum31 · 25/02/2010 09:28

I know found that out myself!!! They didn't tell my anything when they gave me the pill!!!

I found it pretty sore. The difference is they told me that it would feel painful, like early labour. The clinic had an oxygen tank on hand! I hadn't had any pregnancies.

Could endo make the pain worse for you? I have it too, I think it does make gynae procedures worse. Hopefully the mirena will now help though.

iamanewmum31 · 25/02/2010 21:01

Thanks everyone for your comments. My pain has dulled now. If I have one fitted again I will make sure I take stronger painkillers!

Hi there,
I had my coil fitted on friday & i tell you, it was excruciating! I have had 4 children & it was nothing like labour! When i got up from having it fitted, shooting pains were in my vagina & back passage. I could not sit down properly. I told them that it did'nt feel right & they said not to worry, the pain will settle down. I told them that this was not my 1st coil fitting, it was my 4th!! I went home & tried to rest. On sunday i had enough of the pain, it was like my body was trying to contract it out & the pains were gettting worse. I went to the docs the next day & they said that the doctor who fitted it had refered me for an emergency scan to see if it was in the right place. He told me that i would have to bear with it until then. He sent me round to the nurse to make sure that she could feel my threads...She could not feel or see them! The doctor sent me to the hospital straight away to have a scan as he did not know whether my body had expelled it or it had perforated.
I had an ultrasound scan ( transvaginally) & it was not in my cervix. She said that she could not see it anywhere! I felt quite relieved & hoped my body had got rid of it! I was sent for an x-ray of my abdomen & the gynae consultant confirmed it was in my pelvis!!
I was sent home & booked for emergency surgery the next day.
I had a hysteroscopy & laproscopy procedure & it was not found in my pelvis - it was near my rib cage, next to vital organs!
My advice to you is that you know your own body- if something dont feel right, get checked out. I hope this helps in some way as you seem to be suffering what i did!! XX

I hesitate to write this as it sounds as though previous posters have had horrible experiences, but just to reassure anyone thinking of having a coil, I had one fitted about 6 months ago and it was absolutely fine. Didn't feel a thing - no worse than a smear.

I had mine fitted at a family planning clinic and I would say it is definitely worth getting it done by someone who knows what they are doing and who fits them all the time.

My periods are now really light compared to how they used to be, so I'm really pleased with it so far.

karlataylor · 16/12/2018 00:37

I had one fitted in November, I was enthusiastic about it as I'd heard I was least likely to have mood swings and weight gain with the marena and I could do with a five year break from periods but I also had contractions when mine was fitted.
The pain was severe though, I tolerated the first part with the long thing with the gel or anaesthetic or - whatever that was. It hurt but it was tolerable and then they fitted it and that was it - agony.
The dude asked the nurse straight away if she was in agreement to take it back out - I even asked of that was the only option and he told me that I shouldn't have been in that much pain and that something wasn't right.
They put me on antibiotics for PID and tested me for everything even though I was negative for everything in January when I had my daughter.
My test results came back negative and I still don't know what the problem was but my body will not accommodate a coil.
Reading some of these comments, I'm surprised I was willing to have something fitted that my body would expell as a foreign object.
That sounds so dangerous!
