He's 100% fine and dandy about his heart. Looking and feeling so much better. Has even cashed his private healthcare due to the awesome NHS (yes, you read that right! ) and so he and mum can buy a really good bed.

But he had a urinary catheter in hospital and he found he couldn't wee without it. So they left it in for a while for him to get better before they tried to remove it. Still couldn't cope so they gave him a different kind. Apparently he has a prostate problem which can be dealt with at a later date. However he now has an infection and is on anti-bs for it. He is getting a bit fed up with this. Is it a common problem with older men and how likely is it that they can solve it. Or is he going to weeing into a bag for the rest of his days He's got an appointment at Southmead tomorrow but he's afraid they won't do anything because of the infections.

Hi, your dad probably has benign prostatic hypertrophy (an enlarged prostate gland) - see www.patient.co.uk/health/Prostate-Gland-Benign-Enlargement.htm.

All men have this to an extent as they get older but some get it more than others. Some can be treated with medication but many need an operation to reduce the size of the prostate. The infection will not prevent him being treated.

Very few men need long term catheters because of prostate problems - usually only those who cannot have an operation.

Hope it's all sorted soon

Thanks jybay. I will ring and find out how he got on tonight. It's funny how blase we are about such things now - before he was ill last year he'd had died before discussing his waterworks with me
