In so much pain with my tooth. Help please.

I am in the most excrutiating pain with my tooth. I'm not registered with a dentist. I can't afford a dentist even if I can get registered with one. Will my dr give me some painkillers or antibiotics if I see her? I am sure I have an infection.

I am in so much pain I'm in tears and can't sleep.

An implant would be about £3k I think.

Wineonafridaynight · 27/02/2010 11:07

The dentist told me yesterday that an implant would be £2k if I wanted to fill the gap. Needless to say I think I will be quite gappy for quite some time now!

Feeling much, much better today. I'm a bit concerned that the lisp I have developed since my tooth came out is going to stay. I already had a slight lisp which I was quite self conscious off anyway (even more so when someone about 8 years ago asked me if I had some kind of disorder as there DP and her were discussing the way I speak and he insisted I must!), but now I have an even stronger one! I'm sure I will get used to it. DP thinks I'm imagining it. I don't think I am.

Anyway I'll stop moaning. I'm not in awful pain anymore which is great and just wanted to slip back to say thanks for the help everyone has offered me over the first few days. I really appreciate it. I don't know what I would have done in the middle of the night when I was pacing up and down if I hadn't been able to come here and find some other nocturnal people!

I developed a temporary lisp after getting pericoronitis (infection due to erupting wisdom teeth), but it went away within a week once the swelling had died down. So don't panic too much, it'll likely be just a temporary thing.

Yes madame blueberry there are indeed dentists who perpetuate this myth. Lots of them. It is absolute bollocks and it drives me mad.

If there is a massive swelling sometimes I will incise the abscess to drain a bit and give antibiotics for a few days. Usually if the patient for whatever reason does not want the tooth out that day, or if they are really nervous.Or if I am very pushed for time and suspect it will be a difficult extraction. I don't like doing this however.

If there is a huge swelling on a lower molar it is very important to extract the tooth immediately (or at least incise the abscess and obtain drainage) because continued swelling could obstruct the airway.

One of the reasons for the belief that you should not get a tooth out with a swelling is that the tooth is more difficult to anaesthetise. That part IS true.

I have worked in the emergency dental clinic at the local dental hospital for over 20 years and see more swollen faces than most . I have never failed to anaesthetise(and extract) an abscessed tooth, but in the hospital I have more time per patient.

WIne, no offence taken at all. To answer your question, yes , your dentist could indeed have done a root filling on the NHS ,(and if stated it was NOT AVAILABLE on the NHS is on very dodgy ground) and I don't know why they would have suggested getting it done privately. Perhaps it would have been a particularly difficult one and the dentist was not confident of a successful outcome.Specialist endodontist are pretty hot at filling even the most tricky canals.

Thanks Jasper. That's interesting stuff to hear.

The dentist did a cracking job at taking the tooth out. She was very young and new and I think she was quite nervous but she was really good and very compassionate as well which helped a lot. She was happy to stop to give me time to calm down when I got upset and gave me lots of injections to numb the pain.

I think it was quite a tricky extraction as well.

I'm a bit [hmmm] about the root canal treatment and glad you have confirmed to me that it can be done on the NHS but then I guess I probably wouldn't have had it done anyway as I just wanted it all over with. She didn't say private but did say it would cost £500 as assuming it must be.

Spirael I am very pleased to hear that the lisp went. I'm having awful trouble talking to people at the moment. It's fine with DP but in the bank today it was very strange! lol!

Apparently the dentist said my teeth would gradually adjust as well so the gap wouldn't be so big. I can't remember any of that. I must have been in another world. It was my DP who told my mother that and then she dropped it into the conversation. I thought she was going mad!

Glad you are out of the woods.
Second molars can be tricky to extract OR root fill.

I would choose extraction over root filing for myself for a second or third molar.

jasper · 27/02/2010 14:26

some dentists also prescribe antibiotics for toothache when there is NO swelling or evidence of infection. Very bad practice but many patients demand it

MmeBlueberry · 27/02/2010 18:06

I guess it is just a different philosophy, Jasper.

The dentists that I have chosen for myself have all been of the 'save the tooth at all reasonable costs' mentality.

The ones I had when growing up were in the more pull and the problem goes away permanently mode.

Glad you are starting to feel better, Wine. It is an amazing feeling when you finally feel on top of the pain, even if it is still quite bad. Your week must have been a blur.

BaconWheatCrunchies · 28/02/2010 08:30

Jaspar So am I wrong to tell my patients with a facial swelling they will bleed profusely if I take out their tooth?

And I'll admit I'm guilty of giving Abs when they probably won't do anything, but when you can't see anything to do but they're in pain, it does sometimes work! Teeth are like people IMO, sometimes difficult and don't do what we want them to do

Wineonafridaynight · 28/02/2010 12:05

Mmeblueberry It is an amazing feeling! The week was such a blur and the worst part was when I tried to go to work. I got absolutely nothing useful done at all and got the impression a lot of people thought I was moaning about nothing!

Oh well, looking forward to a nice pub roast this afternoon if it doesn't hurt too much to eat it!
