I've had a sore throat for AGES - worth seeing GP?

Normally wouldn't bother with seeing a doctor for just a sore throat but it is driving me mad, I've had it for at least a month and it doesn't appear to be getting better.

Have a cough too but think the sore throat might be causing the cough as it's a dry tickle, not chesty at all. Is it worth going to see the GP? Or will they just say they can't do anything so take OTC stuff?

Thanks ladies.

gargle with some soluble aspirin as long as you are not asthmatic. Go and get a blood test as long term sore throats can be a result of athritis. Are you eyes sore or dry at all?

I do suffer from asthma - mildly most of the time, worse when pregnant or really run down - would I be best to avoid?

My eyes are quite dry but cough keeping me up so put it down to just being knackered!

if you are a diagnosed asthmatic aspirin is contraindicated. Gargle with some difflam ...it is very good.

If your eyes are a bit dry it is another sign of arthritis problems...any sore joints any where

also if you have any catarrh dripping down your throat at night this can make your throat sore. DS2 suffers with this. it is called post nasal drip. it has turned him into a mouth breather at night and he has a permanent sore throat.

No runny nose. I have had a few joints issues recently, bone like bump on one knee and soreness on both, have MRI on Thursday so that is interesting. Bloody hope it's not though, I'm only 22!

Will get gurgling and perhaps take a trip to see GP if still hanging around next week.

ask for a rheumatoid factor test and and ESR test, that is normally a good indicator of anything going on

alypaly · 23/02/2010 21:25

i hope not too,for your sake

Only 1 in 20 asthmatics gets wheeze with non-steroidals (ibuprofen etc) and aspirin. As long as you are only a mild asthmatic, it is fine to try aspirin though obviously don't keep on using it if it makes you wheezy.

As you are only 22, the chances of the sore throat being anything to worry about are extremely low but, as a GP, I would want to check you over if it has gone on for more than a month.

Went to GP yesterday as was up all night coughing and had ridiculously sore throat... Bronchitis and a course of antibiotics should sort me out!
