How long would you leave it before visiting someone who's had Norovirus?

Both my mum and dad have had it, they stopped being sick and having the runs on Sunday evening, but they're feeling pretty run down and as I live only ten mins away I wanted to go and get them a few things and help them out a bit at home.

But I've got an 8 week old dd who'd have to come with me, so I really really really don't want to get Norovirus myself or pass it on to her, NHS direct website says they are no long infectious 48 hours after symptoms have gone, other websites say 72 hours. Which is right?

I work as a nurse, and our policy is that you have to be symptom free (i.e no diarrhoea or vomitting) for 48hrs

I believe for kitchen staff it is 72hrs

When my mother was in hospital and we had nv we were told not to visit her for five days after symptoms ending.

HeadFairy · 23/02/2010 13:17

thanks notnowbernard... they've washed everything thoroughly, bleached the whole house from top to bottom and have definitely been symptom free since sunday, but they sounded so pathetic and sorry for themselves I wanted to take them some things round, they haven't even got any teabags left! I might leave a food parcel at the door and go round tomorrow for a proper visit. That should be ok shouldn't it?

I think that's what I'd do, because of the 8w old (congrats, btw)

Just to be sure

Food parcel a lovely idea, sure they'll be v v grateful!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2010 13:21

i think that would be a lovely idea maybe drop off a newspaper or a magazine too.

HeadFairy · 23/02/2010 13:22

Thanks... it'll be the world's dullest food parcel, they're not up to eating much, but you've got to have tea when you're ill don't you? I'm putting in some bread and some nice jam so they can have dry toast with a bit of jam on it to give them a bit of energy, and some fat coke to pep them up. Maybe a bumper pack of loo roll too

Newspaper... that's a good idea... might even get really creative and stick in a dvd if I can find one they might like to watch! My normally super active mum has been reduced to watching Loose Women and is going slowly crazy!

I was told 5 days by the hospital last year when we were visiting during noro season.

I'd do the food parcel on the doorstep and give it a day or two before visiting (but then I verge on hysterical at the thought of vomit).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I would leave it long a humanly possible! Both me and the DH had it a couple of weeks ago, my sister visited a week later then she came down with it??!! Might not have been from the same source granted but horrible none the less. I would like to point out though that our 11 month old never got it even when I gave him a BF the day after I gave my bowels a springclean!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2010 13:27

some nice chicken soup might help for electrolytes and bananas.
you def have to rescue your Mum from watching Loose women! If they've got a computer you could introduce them to farmville on facebook

HeadFairy · 23/02/2010 13:38

Oh dear boatgirlie.. still, good to hear your ds didn't get it.

Ohyoubadkitten - indeed I do have to rescue her, she's only been retired a few months and isn't used to the utter blandness of daytime telly!

Its a handy way though of eliminating those foods which you shouldn't really be eating!! I've not been able to stomach San Miguel and the DH dirty kebabs since ha ha!! Poor sister can no longer look at tuna sandwiches though poor thing!
