MrsMorgan · 22/02/2010 11:48

I apparently have one and was wondering if anyone else ever has and what happened.

Have been given antibiotics and told to go back if it gets worse or doesn't get better.

might need draining, poor you

Is it a bartholin's?

MrsMorgan · 22/02/2010 12:07

Haven't a clue tbh, there is no spot or anything. It's not on my bits but the very very top of my thigh where it goes into your groin. It is all red, swollen and hot.

Praying that the antibiotics work.

My friend has a condition called Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic and stubborn disease centred on inflammation of the large specialised sweat glands (apocrine glands) that are found mainly in the armpits and groins. These areas show a distinctive mixture of boil-like lumps, areas leaking pus, and scarring.

More info here. Does this sound like what you have?

Hope it gets better soon!

MrsMorgan · 22/02/2010 12:52

That is interesting Fourarms. I am not sure of this is that, but I do get alot of spots under my arms, so i don't know if that is linked at all.

OP posts:
FourArms · 22/02/2010 13:05

From some reading I've done it can come on at different times, and has different stages, so yours could be linked, but in the early stages (and hopefully won't get any worse!). Might be worth mentioning to your GP though if it occurs again.

MrsMorgan · 22/02/2010 22:23

Thanks for that fourarms, will keep it in mind.

Does anyone have any idea when the antibiotics will start to kick in, if indeed they do ?? Will the redness start to go first ?

Things are not better at the moment, infact may be slightly worse although it is hard to tell.

Currently having to force myself to eat just so that I can take the antib's which are then making me feel queasy.

morethanyoubargainfor · 22/02/2010 22:40

having got HS stage 2 i am aware of these, probably what will happen is the ANti B's will start to kick in after about 3 days, during that time it will probably come to a head and become very painful. You might not have the pain.

The head will either be like a pimple or a full on shimey purple head, if its the later it will more than likely then go on to burst fairly quickly. It might then keep filling up and oozing puss for anything up to 10 days.

I personally don't take anitnbiotics anymore for them and just go with it, but i have had HS for 8 years now and have approx 3 boils a week appear . I am never without them.

Another thing i find that helps is a cotton flannel soaked in the hottest water i can bear and then just lay it over the sight for up to 10 minutes if you can

HTH and hope you feel better soon

morethanyoubargainfor · 22/02/2010 22:40

It will get worse before you notice an improvement IYKWIM>

MrsMorgan · 22/02/2010 22:45

Thankyou, I am so pleased you replied. Am feeling a bit teary about it all.

The thing I don't really understand at the moment is why it is so big. It starts of adjacent to my bikini line, on my thigh and then goes down round in the direction of my bum. I am slightly worried that if it does get a head on it, it will be a huge one.

I am rather scared tbh.

I did think it might get worse before it got better.

Have you ever had to have yours drained morethanyoubargainfor ??

OP posts:
morethanyoubargainfor · 23/02/2010 07:37

Mrsmogan being scared is normal IME, also being tearful is as well you may well feel really tired as well. Your body is fighting an infection.

I have had them exactly the same as you where they literally run from front to back, these normally have a few heads on them.

what you have to remeber is the severity of mine, but yes i have had several drainages and actual operatiions for mine. i get them everywhere not just in the armpits or groin i get them on my legs, back, ear lobes, etc. I don't want to scare you even more so it not really fair of me to compare mine and yours.

A little tip if you can go pant free for as much as possible, don't wear any lace or scalloped edges either until it has completely gone. Listen to what your body is telling you, if you are tired then sleep, if you are in pain take painkillers and maybe a soak in the bath, eat whatever you r body is telling you you need etc.

Any other help i can give you just let me know, even if you just need a chat, i am in and out today but i will reply to asap.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 23/02/2010 07:40

I've had a couple, bloody painful things they are too. Both needed lancing and draining. The second needed packing too because it was so big. Not a lot of fun flashing your flange at a Scandinavian doctor in Spain. He recommended brufen to reduce the inflamation.
Like morethan said, go with what your body tells you. Good luck.

diddl · 23/02/2010 08:27

I had one in my armpit.

My arm swelled & my veins were standing out.

Had it drained/lanced/surgically removed(?)

Not sure of the term.

Anyway, could barely move my arm when I got to the surgery, was in tears with the pain.

Terrible coward-never had a local anaesthetic before-just about crying at the thought of that also.

That stung like a bügger, but felt nothing at all when they removed it & OMG the relief when it was gone!

Just had to take it easy for the rest of the day & take painkillers if necessary.

MrsMorgan · 23/02/2010 09:30

Thank you all for the posts. Feeling very crappy today, so tired and queasy and also have stomach cramps and a bit of diorhea from the ab's I suppose.

I have to go out this morning to take ds to an appointment, but as soon as I have dropped him back at school I am coming home to bed. I am hoping the fresh air might help a bit.

The abscess area looked a tiny bit better this morning I think, slightly less red and not as hot.

I am slightly worried that the diorhea means that my body won't be getting enough of the ab's. The leaflet in with them said to only contact the doctor if it was very watery which it isn't really.

Thans again, it really helps to know that other people have been through this and got through it.

Glad it's looking a bit better today. Might be worth a call to the GP if you've got diahorrea. They might be able to prescribe a different type which is more resistant to the diahorrea? Maybe a phone call to the nurse might reassure you? Or maybe NHS direct?

MrsMorgan · 24/02/2010 20:38

The diahorrea hasn't been as bad today thankfully.

The area where the abscess is, is now alot less red and not at all hot. There is one small area where it is still red and i think this must be the bit where the actual abscess is.

I am starting to wonder though wether the antib's are going to get rid of it completely

PureAsTheColdDrivenSnow · 24/02/2010 20:48

sounds like Bartholins cyst to me.

Incredibly painful, I had serious amounts of codeine to deal with the pain (and I'm not a wimp) make sure you get decent pain relief if it's really bad..

It didn't need lancing, but the anti-inflammatories and antib's sorted it out in 3-4 days.

Big amounts of sympathy - one of the most painful things i've ever experienced.
