Cardiologist appointment

Am hoping someone medical/someone with experience of this can help me.

My mum has had palpitations on and off for a while (we put them down to her being on Arimidex after a mastectomy 4 years ago).

In January she had a really bad episode.
She had an ECG at the time which was normal. She then wore a 24 hour monitor for a day about a week ago. She hasn't had any palpitations for a few weeks, so she assumed it would all be fine.

Today she got an appointment through from hospital for a months time.

She got herself very upset thinking this means that something awful showed up on her tests.

However the letter reads like a routine appointment. But would the consultant see her if everything was OK? I suppose it was quite a bad episode so maybe even a normal result would require further testing (also she is 72 and a cancer survivor).

She is very stressed at the moment due to my DD awaiting testing for a neurological illness, so we all assumed the palpitations were down to stress.

It's a difficult time for everyone so I hoped that someone here could reassure us/explain things a little. She won't call the hospital to ask about it, as she is too scared.

TIA.

Don't panic! If it was anything scary, they would have got her in straight away.It may well be that she has something called paroxysmal AF, where the heart rhythym goes irregular for a bit, and then rights itself. Approximately 10% of over 70's have this, so it's quite common, and easily treatable with medications. Alternatively, it might not be anything at all!

I agree, it sounds routine. Even if everything is normal they would still want to let her know the results of the test.

I hope so

they always do a follow up apppointment as standard. Trust me if they were really worried they wouldnt wait a month

In my experience with hearts if they are worried they can get you an appointment pronto (like the next day!)

Thanks loads.

I am really hoping it is just NOTHING at all, not even something minor, just don't know how we would all handle any more bad news, mid March is when we are expecting DD's diagnosis too.

Thanks for all the reassurance.
