have been given codeine by gp to top up diclofenac and paracetemol. Tried it last night (30mg) after a long run of very uncomfortable nights.
it was really horrible. Didn't help with pain relief at all, just made my body very tired while my mind was fully awake. so even less sleep.

think I preferred the pain without the oddities.

Was referred by physio to surgeon, waited a couple of months saw him he seemed to agreed with physio (rotator cuff or slap tear). Had an MRI arthrogram 2 weeks later!!. It was a bit sore but ok. Its a very big needle!! I go back for results March 30th. The big wait seems to be for the ortho guy. Sorry typing one handed

It makes me swell up like a balloon and itch like a dog with fleas. Junior Doc refused to believe me that it was the codeine doing it to me until some lovely nurse explained it is converested to morphine in the body and as I am allergic to morphine it was a stupid drug to prescribe!

mspotatochip · 18/02/2010 15:19

oybbk at that price its worth trying thats one prescription charge for worthless codeine!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 15:30

thats very true on the price!!! good way to put it
eek at arthrogram, I thought it would be like a normal mri. oh dear. perhaps as they've done an ultrasound I won't need one? It was very good that you didn't have to wait too long between surgeon and first test. Bit of a wait now for you though

oops!! not good!!! silly silly doc.

even better - lloyds accept paypal and I have enough in my account, earned by doing surveys to get the dual channel tens here. Hooray!

It affects me in the same way OP, all derivatives of codeine do. It makes me feel out of it(this part I don't mind so much, can be quite relaxing) but I always also get tummy cramps, constipation and then can't sleep so the slightly funny woozy feeling really isn't worth it. I can just have gin for that instead.

coldtits · 18/02/2010 16:08

i space out, and if I keep taking it a physically collapse! No codeine for me.....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 16:08

I agree gin is much nicer

I think the main wait is 4 weeks for a radiologist to read the mri results. The arthrogram bit is to inject the contrast for the mri into the joint so you may not avoid oybbk

Me too - especially to kansasmum and dozymare who had cardiac side effects! Sorry for your experience, but good to hear it's not just me - and that I haven't been over-egging it by writing NO CODEINE on all medical notes since. I was prescribed it during pg for SPD pain, first (and only) time I took it I had terrifying heart palpitations - to the extent that we called an ambulance because I thought something was seriously wrong.
Quite a shame though, as paracetamol does sweet FA for me...

mspotato - is it like a steroid shot? that was ok til after.

OP posts:
mspotatochip · 18/02/2010 20:20

I don't know I've never had a steroid shot. They give you a local then inject the dye and liquid into the joint. it feels odd as if its not your shoulder. Then it was very painful for about three days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2010 22:08

so not exactly fun then. not that the steroid was fun but it was ok.
