How does chicken pox start?

Hello ... s'only me.
I was just wondering how chicken pox started as DS has this morning woken up with two spots on his face .... one on his forehead and one on his cheek. They are red ... completely round ... and are about 3/4 cm in diameter. They are slightly raised but he says they don't itch. They could of course be mozzie bites but he normally reacts to them (v. itchy) and it is winter here so there aren't many mozzies about ...
There are no other symptoms ... no runny nose or anything and I haven't heard that it is going around at kindy or anything (although he has only just started at a new kindy 2 weeks ago).
Can anyone help? Does it sound like the 'pox'? What should I do if it is? Should I bother with the doctor? Any advice gratefully received!!
PS Am nearly 8 wks pg so if he has got it what does that mean for me??????

Ghosty, i think it usually starts with spots on the tummy from memory.

Sorry don't know about the pg issue. Hope it's not the pox/

Well, nothing you have said would rule out chickenpox, but of course it's really hard to tell until a) he gets more and b) they crust over. As far as you are concerned, have you had it? You are at the dangerous stage if not, I'm afraid, so I would definitely see a doctor. There's always the possibility of an immunoglobulin jab. If you've had it already then there's nothing to worry about, and of course the spots could be anything at the moment. Good luck!

Chicken pox looks like little watery blisters Ghosty, have a close look and see if there is any fluid in them. They will spread pretty quickly in numbers if it is.

scoobysnax · 18/06/2003 21:28

My dd had 1 spots above her lip and 1 on her shoulder to start with, so it doesn't always start with the tummy spots.
I phoned nhs direct for advice - they are very good.

Thanks Sambo and Tamum .... I have definitely had it ... got the scars to prove it ... so that's ok ... phew ...
Should I not take DS until I am sure either way? How long does it take before spots increase or go crusty? I don't think I can bear staying in what with Morning Sickness and all ... going out takes my mind off it ....

This delightful picture shows a new and a crusted pox - yeuch.

tamum · 18/06/2003 21:33

Ghosty, in my experience the spots come thick and fast after the first day. If he still has two spots by tomorrow and they're still looking just red, I would have thought you'd be in the clear to send him to nursery, but it depends on their policy really. If you can get him to a doctor to check that would safest I guess. Poor you, this really brings back memories, vomiting constantly (pregnant with dd) and trying to look after fractious ds. REALLY good news that you've had it yourself though, absolutely nothing to worry about there then

Ghosty · 18/06/2003 21:34

Thanks Lou ... have just had a good look at DS spots and can't see if there is a bite hole in the middle .... but they don't look like the spots in the picture ... they are much more round and seem bigger and are perfect circles ...
So ... maybe we've got away with it this time ... I will keep checking though and let you guys know ...
Thanks for the prompt replies everyone

DS1s first spots were on his face and looked kind of like acne. By the next day, he had lots elsewhere too. You should know today, Ghosty.

My poor sis has just called from Germany - she flew out there earlier today with her eldest ds, whilst mum looks after youngest - gone to visit her husband, who's a contractor, for the weekend.
Noticed some spots coming up on his body on the plane, but thought it was a heat rash. Since landing, they've become far more widespread, popping up as she looks at him. Mostly on the torso, but also hairline, in ears, groin etc. Don't itch or look blistery at the moment, but she feels certain it is c pox - the nursery told her it is doing the rounds.
So, now she's stuck indefinitely in Germany with a poorly ds - won't be allowed to return until spots scab over!

Got a great tip from Sobernow when my dd2 got the pox. Use Rhus Tox homeopathic remedy. This really speeded up the whole process. All the spots had peaked/scabbed in 3or 4 days. Whereas it was more like 7 or 8 days when dd1 had it. Also Eurax cream is great at stopping the itching for a good amount of time, especially at night if they have spots on their botooms etc. My dd2 didn't seem to notice she got it despite being fairly pickled, because of the cream etc. She was more weary though and napped every day for 5 days after lunch, when normally she wouldn't sleep. HTH.

P.S. Got my Rhus Tox from a GNC store.

Ghosty · 19/06/2003 21:19

Definitely not c/pox folks ... DS has no more spots than yesterday and the two on his face are no worse and I think are definitely mozzie bites.
Sorry for the panic ... but I now I will know what to look for if and when he does get it. NZ offers a c/pox vaccination but I don't think I will bother with that.
Sorry about your sis Leese ... hope your d/neph gets better soon!

my DS had 3 spots on his neck and then 2 days later he woke up covered, still might be the pox, hope it is not for your sake though Ghosty.
