Endometrial Ablation - has anyone here had it?

I have terrible heavy periods and I can't carry onlike this as they are as they are affecting my life - eg. I just turned down a good job that would involve a bit of travelling as I couldn't risk being away from a toilet for more than an hour! I have thought about the mirena coil, but although my dr says that there are no side affects, I think MN has put me off ! (I do suffer from mild depression and am worried the mirena could make it worse).

So has anyone here had endometrial ablation and can they tell me if they have had a good experience? (I am only in my 30's but I do not want any more dc's.)

Thanks

I suffered the same problems and after the Mirena not being great for me I had an ablation after many years of weighting up the facts...best thing I done and wish I had just gone ahead and had that 4 years ago. Recovery great and results fantastic very light period that still lasts the same amount of time but is minimal and has no affect on my life. I could wear white tight jeans on my heaviest day now.....thats how light my period is now. Any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for replying, I'm glad it went well for you. I am a bit of a chicken - was there much pain after the operation, or any other side affects? I get bad PMT, do you think this may improve, does the ablation affect your hormones at all?

I guess I am just also a bit scared as there is no going back, and although I definitely don't want more DC's, it still seems a drastic solution.

Also, my consultant said that the operation only has an 80% success rate, so this worries me a bit too, although I guess I really need to take that chance.

I had an ablation 3 months ago after many years of heavy bleeding which inflicted misery on my life both at home and work. I tried the Mirena coil but that's a nightmare I'd rather not discuss and that was removed promptly.

Since the ablation I've had no bleeding whatsoever, PMT is minor, it's fantastic, like Costitjustisok I wish I'd had the procedure years ago.

Good Luck

Sounds good - think I will go for it.

Hi Frankie....sorry for the delay in getting back to you..half term plays havoc with my MN time!!!. I had a few slight cramps afterwards but nothing as bad as period cramps I had when I was really heavy so not bad at all but yes there was cramp but a hot water bottle and ibuprofen sorted that out. I did however have a watery discharge for about 6 weeks..was told about this but could not wait for that to stop!

As for PMT I think that has improved greatly also so there must be some affect on hormones....I do still have some PMT but it is definatley not as bad as before the ablation.

I had a fantastic surgeon who told me the success rate was much higher than what yo hve been told, so I am wondering what method you will be offered. There is the Laser or microwave one which is what I had and another balloon method which uses hot water. Think the second method has a less successful outcome.

In my opinion this should be offered to women as standard if they have finished their families and are suffering heavy periods but this does not seem to be the case. I probably cost the NHS more prior to the ablation with coils and doctors and hospital visits for heavy bleeding.

Hope this helps. Good luck

I had it over a year ago and it's changed my life. I had a bladder repair at the same time so I can't comment on the pain or recovery as it was more severe because of this.

Good luck!

I have been told it is like a soldering iron inside me, which will burn out the lining of my womb! So not a lazer or a microwave.

Is it common to have the watery discharge? If so, I will make sure that I have it well before any summer holiday.

I also have endometriosis, I wonder if this could affect the result?

Thanks for all your advice x
