My DH had three bottom back teeth removed on his left jaw about more than 10 years ago because of a cyst in jaw. He never had anything done on it and wasn't really thinking of doing anything to it until recently the bottom back tooth on the right jaw got infected and it looks like he has to have it taken it out despite the costly £600 root canal to save the tooth. We are thinking about getting the implants done (as he needs to chew his food somehow!!) but his current dentist says it would cost about £2500 a tooth!! That means £10000 on four teeth!! He doesn't want dentures and was wondering if anybody had to do multiple implants done and about how much it costed, and also can you go wrong with implants... I would personally like to get his left jaw done at least because of the bone loss in the jaw that can occur if you don't have any teeth...??
Thank you in advance.

on eof my local dentists does them for £1800 each, which is £200 below the norm. Its an expensive set of teeth but worth it. My badmitnon friend had 4 done at the same time and doesnt regret it at all..but she is skint now

Are they all on one side? if so, he could maybe have 2 implants done & a bridge rather than 4 individual implants, but it depends on different factors.

Implants are expensive. You could always ask if he would do a 'discount' if you have all 4 done together.

Also it is worth bearing in mind that over the course of 10yrs he would have some significant bone shrinkage, so it may be a more involved process, which adds to cost.

Was just going to say about a bridge. I have one dental implant (which alone cost about £5k!!!) but my Dad has loads - think the total cost was about £20k, but he was adamant that he couldn't wear false teeth and that was the only thing he could do other than be toothless! Think he has a total of 9 implants & then bridges with crowns to complete the look. He is utterly delighted with them.

Cost sounds comparable to what I paid a few years ago (about 8 years ago in fact). I had one back molar done straight after extraction of the real tooth, which is apparantly a slightly easier procedure than leaving it till later. Mine has been brilliant so far - no regrets if you can afford it.

Only problem with mine was that the first implant didn't 'take'. So I had to get it redone with a new one a week later. There was no additional charge for this.

My FIL has just had full dentures fitted onto implants. Twelve implants in total with porcelain top dentures and lower of another material which I can't think of the name of, I don't think they are acrylic. It has cost him £28,000 in total!! BUT, they are absolutely beautiful, they do not look at all like dentures, they look like real teeth. He has had no problems whatsoever with any of the process and although he only had them fitted last week he is eating well with them and feels like he has had them forever.

I must add that he is 74 years old and has spent the last 20 years with no teeth at all as he couldn't stand his dentures. He used his life savings to pay for them, bless him

£28,000 OMG

glad I found this as dh needs similar (though only one) and was quoted £2000 for an implant or £200 for a bridge. Dentist said implant was by far the best option all around, but we can't afford that. He'll have a bridge - we're going to find that difficult to pay for..When did dentistry become so very expensive?

vjg13 · 17/02/2010 20:28

The dental school at our local university does implants at a discounted rate. It would be a qualified dentist who hadn't done it before and would be supervised.

I have a single implant for a missing front tooth. It cost ca 2500 GBP, and is worth every cent.

I had no pain while it was being put in, and it has worked just like a real tooth ever since.
