Need ideas for high calorie, easy to digest foods

I had gastro-enteritis earlier this week and lost over 2kg, which is a lot for me as I'm not a very big person to start with. Plus the bug has caused a relapse of colitis, which causes me to lose weight, or struggle to keep it on.

What can I eat that is gentle on the digestion but which will pack in the calories? I am a bit bored with bread, pasta and potatoes.

Ice cream, full fat milk, double cream, butter?

Could you drink something like Complan?

castille · 13/02/2010 21:04

I made a big bowl porridge with full fat milk this morning, that was nice. But I can't eat too much dairy in one day

Complan is my absolute last resort...

Can you eat butter? I've always understood that many people who have to limit milk can still take butter? If so -

Russian Fish pie - you need a couple of eggs, some cooked or uncooked fish and some flaky pastry (I made my own and it wasn't hard but easier to buy ready made). Grease a baking sheet.
Hard-boil one egg. Preheat oven to 180 or so. Roll out a sheet of pastry. Cut the fish into chunks and put on the pastry with the chopped egg. Add any flavouring you fancy - salt and pepper, parsley? Add a small knob of butter. Fold the pastry over to make a parcel and press the edges together. Beat the remaining egg in a cup and brush it over the pastry. Put the pie on the baking sheet and bake until golden brown.

Put butter or white sauce on your vegetables? Also consider savoury pancakes?

How abouts Ensure?
complan=revolting.

castille · 13/02/2010 21:24

mmmm that sounds lovely, choosy, thank you, will def try that!

I love butter but am wary of it (the dairy connection), perhaps I should try slathering it on thicker and see how I get on.

Never tried Ensure. Is it tasty? I'd rather eat real food but if I absolutely have to turn to supplements, something less revolting than Complan would be nice...

I've not tried it but heard it is nicer.
perhaps just for a short while trying supplements as well as proper food at the moment might help.

Hi, i'm in a similiar position to you Castille. Started losing weight before Christmas through stomach upsets and haven't put on the weight again. Mind you I don't tend to eat much during school holiday times so expect to lose weight then. But how do I put it back on again? Never heard of Ensure but will give it a try. Remember years ago reading about adding dried milk power to whole milk to bulk it up - might give it a whirl again! Bit sensitive with smells at the moment too, and don't like fish either. Any advice/tips people could offer would be really appreciated.

Peanut/almond/cashew nut butter on toast. (or stirred into main meal)

Avacado with anything. Coconut milk/oil- added to curries etc. Crumpets instead of toast.

Can you do yoghurt? Tesco finest ones are quite calorific.

We're on a "get DS fatter" kick at the moment. He doesn't do much dairy either. I've been busy staring at labels in tesco and my trolley looks like I'm shopping for a party - twix, fudge, syrup waffles etc.

PhoebeB · 13/02/2010 23:31

Hey thanks kenny, I'll bear your suggestions in mind and let you know how I get on. Will go shopping tommorrow!

castille · 14/02/2010 09:31

Yoghurt is ok in moderation, I already buy full fat ones but maybe the ones with extra cream are what I need!

Nut butters would be perfect but they are a bit indigestible so can only have them in small amounts. Avocado is a good idea, love avocado and bacon.

Hope you find things that work Phoebe.

You poor thing. I do sypathise. I have colitis, and have been very fortunate with it till now. I ate a lot of ice cream and that combined with a hefty dose of steroids whacked the weight back on pretty quickly. Olive oil is good and lots of pasta with creamy sauces. Nutella is good. Mayonaise with everything savoury is a good calorie dose!

PhoebeB · 14/02/2010 14:08

Been making a list of everyone's suggestions - hopefully it won't be too long before I see a difference, I'll let you know. Thanks everyone and I hope things work out for you too Castille.
